We were lucky to catch up with Cynthia Deehr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cynthia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a client that you appreciate them?
I had been a realtor for many years prior to marrying my husband, an Air Force veteran. I went from selling oceanfront, resort area homes to helping him, who was also an agent with military clients. Most first time homebuyers. These kids came from all over the country, some had traveled and had a Permanent Change of Station, others not. I found that many of them were far from home and during the holidays had no family here in NJ. I made sure no one ate alone or struggled through Holidays when far from home. I’ve had many clients at the holiday dinner table and every Memorial Day weekend we have a huge bbq with our VFW, clients and friends. I try to be a long time resource for them throughout their journey.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began selling real estate in 1999. I had an excellent manager and worked with a wonderful company. One I stayed with for 17 years. I then had 2 babies, they worked with me and continued to for years. I have 4, now all grown and I can honestly say they have all at one time or another worked in real estate. I work with both Sellers and Buyers. I’ve been very fortunate in this business. I’ve never put my business in one box and have continuously educated myself to be able to service my clients both professionally and ethically. I’ve sold and listed amazing homes but my favorite work is my military clients. I work the hardest for them because they are so deserving of a wonderful home. I feel I need to go beyond for my clients making sure I have the most talented and knowledgable vendors to assist them every step of the way wether they are buying or selling. Especially my military clients. I had no idea about the base or the need until I married Mike, my husband, an Air Force veteran. He took my kids in as his own and has been an amazing role model. They grew up in the VFW with amazing men and women. They volunteered and learned. My only son is now an Army ROTC cadet in Tennessee continuing the military tradition. I hope when it is his time to need a realtor, he will receive the same dedication I work so hard to achieve.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivot is to say the least. I was doing well and all of a sudden, well maybe not that sudden, I was a single mom with 4 young kids. Alone. Their father left and never looked back. What should I do? All I knew was real estate. Superstorm Sandy came shortly after, I swear that was the only way we ate. There was a church that fed us for weeks. The real estate market was at a standstill, I had these 4 little kids looking to me for strength. I thought it would break me. I had always done a lot of volunteering for a domestic violence shelter and my friends who I volunteered with came up with a local way for everyone looking to hire, contact us and we would share with the head of the DV home. I came across a secretary for a local auto body shop. I needed work, no child support…real estate not back yet. I don’t know what the owners of All Time Auto Body saw in me but they gave me a full time job. I did that, worked real estate in the evening, weekends and and during lunch. I also took a job at Walgreens on Wednesdays to help my oldest, who worked there, get a scholarship from them. It was a lot, but we banned together and got through it. Successfully.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I’m always in touch with my clients. They know I am the go to for real estate and anything NJ
