We recently connected with Cynthia Bischoff and have shared our conversation below.
Cynthia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Thank you so much for inviting me to share the story behind my company Heartliving. I established my coaching and seminar business in 1998, and I’m pleased that it is still thriving today. Through my work, I have developed and delivered life-coaching and wellness sessions, seminars, and products to thousands internationally, both in person and virtually. My mission and dedication to my work has shaped the meaning of my life of service and self-improvement.
The mission behind my work has been an integral part of who I am. From as far back as I can remember I have been an eternal student, always looking at ways to learn, grow, and improve my life and assist others in doing the same. My mission at Heartliving and in my personal life is the same: I seek to raise my consciousness (to learn, improve, and grow) as I assist others in raising their consciousness to create a better life and a better world.
I began my career as a university administrator and business consultant. During my early university career, I was very successful and worked long hours. Often I would reflect at the end of a day, and as much as I enjoyed creating and teaching meaningful academic programs, I was exhausted. I wondered how I could possibly create greater work life balance. I would talk with students and colleagues and realize that at a much deeper level, other people were struggling with creating meaning in their lives, too. Frequently, the remarks would be… “I wish I had more time to relax, to enjoy life… I work so hard, some days are just about surviving, but I really long to make a difference… so I just have to keep juggling … maybe eventually I can slow down….”
At that time in my early 30’s, I was married and had two small children, and the unexpected happened. I went through a painful divorce. I remained in the family home, grateful to be awarded custody of my children, and I recall the many nights I would sit at the top of the stairs, looking at shadows on the wall in the bedroom’s dim light, feeling as though I was keeping watch over the unspoken fears in my life. What deep pain within me needs voice? Where am I going? What am I here to do? How can I reframe and resurrect my life? I knew my passion was to assist others but what was my purpose?
Soon after, I was given an opportunity to take a trip to Bosnia to pray for world peace. I approached this travel as a sacred pilgrimage. This life-changing trip of prayer and self-reflection afforded me time to lift myself up and reframe my circumstances. I created a personal mission statement to remain hopeful in all my endeavors and to come from a place of generosity rather than lack. On my return home, my family and colleagues told me they were inspired by my attitude, the way I was showing up in the world, the life I was creating. How, they asked me, are you able to do this, and how do we find our passion and purpose?
I knew intuitively that my destiny was to assist individuals in finding more profound meaning and balance in their everyday lives. It is what I, myself, was searching for. I wanted to participate in work that would allow me to contribute to others as a work of heart. I read inspirational books and articles about the heart, wellness, meditation, and energy healing, and I became certified in life coaching and numerous healing modalities in the U.S. and abroad. After extensive training, I re-emerged with a unique business and intuitive curriculum.
With a passionate heart, I established my Heartliving business in 1998 and knew then that my mission was to assist others in reframing the life they had created as I had done. Through healing seminars and sessions, I offered clients life solutions through an integrated view of body, mind, and spirit. My passion was to help them establish greater life meaning. leading them to identify their own passion and purpose. I enjoy nothing more than hearing people’s stories and assisting them to become the best version of themselves.
For 26 years, I have worked passionately in my Heartliving work in the U.S. and abroad. I have taught personal rituals for self-care, balance, wellness, healing, and personal growth. My client base has grown so much, and I have evolved in the process.
Cynthia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a master speaker and storyteller, I inspire others through my poignant life journey of risk-taking and living my soul’s mission. My authentic compassion and tireless commitment to helping people through significant, transformational life events distinguishes me.
I have helped clients with the most challenging circumstances, such as reframing traumas, managing life-threatening illnesses (understanding the symbolic reason for illness and applying complementary healing modalities), and guiding people to understand their life’s journey.
My unique curriculum is grounded in both business and intuitive principles. I have studied abroad and in the U.S. and am certified in numerous modalities, including Acupressure, Bio-energy, Breathwork, Hypnotherapy, Medical Intuition, Shamanic Studies, and Reiki. I hold a Ph.D. in Metaphysics.
I offer individual sessions and classes on Zoom. The Heartliving Hour is a monthly program that meets one hour each week and offers inspirational concepts and practical exercises to help individuals transform their lives. More information is available at www.heartliving.com. I also provide motivational quotes, videos, and word-of-the-day on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Heartliving.
Before creating Heartliving, I taught and coached individuals in academic, business, and community settings. I developed and marketed hundreds of university outreach programs and consulted extensively for businesses nationwide, including Dollar Tree Stores, Ingersoll Rand, BP, Saturn, Sentara Health System, and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
I previously authored several academic textbooks. In 2019, I completed my fourth book, On Wings of Hope: Leading Lily Home which has received three awards. Heartfelt, this true story brings the reader face-to-face with essential insights about life as it shares my experience in guiding a young client, Lily, through a journey from heartache to peace. My book integrates my varied areas of expertise—life coaching, spiritual psychology, philosophy, and energy healing—to present a unique approach toward understanding the meaning of life, relationships, mortality, and the afterlife.
I have received numerous awards for my work. I was inducted into the Norfolk, VA, Business Hall of Fame after receiving the BEST of NORFOLK HOLISTIC PRACTITIONER Award for 14 years in a row. In 2013, I received the Virginian Pilot Inside Business “Women in Business Achievement Award.” I am so grateful for my dedicated and supportive clients who place their growth mindset as a priority. My passion is to inspire others to live their best lives!
Have you ever had to pivot?
(NOTE: This was shared during the first answer fully.)
Interesting to many, I did not start my Heartliving business with any capital or by securing a loan. Instead I began by joining a business organization that for a nominal fee offered office space for members to share to get started. After a year, I had enough clients to go out on a limb and rent office space. This was a tremendous risk financially, but I forged forward. I knew that I could not grow without a risk. I had my office successfully from 1999 until 2020 at which time Covid caused me to shut down the physical space. In turn, my work went on Zoom and has flourished. People out of the area began attending virtual classes and sessions. Heartliving has the same value with a new convenient experience and continues to allow me to provide assistance to those in need.
