We were lucky to catch up with Cynthia Adame recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cynthia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
On February 4, 2022 I took a leap of faith and started my private studio salon now called Cyn Creates. 2 years before I took that leap of faith I had worked at 2 different hair salons; which I personally didn’t feel the most comfortable working at. I remember having a friend who was opening a salon noticed my stress and offered me to rent a chair at her salon and because I was so desperate to leave the environment I was currently at, I didn’t think much of it and just said YES. However, due to the distance (an hour everyday to and back) I had to look for a place much closer. Thankfully within a month after letting my friend know I’d be leaving I was able to find a salon studio 15 minutes away from me. I was definitely scared. I’m 23 at the time and no one in my family has ever taught me anything about becoming my own boss. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was ready.
Cynthia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey beautiful faces, my name is Cynthia Adame, I’m now 24 and the oldest of 7 and before you assume my mom had us all… She did not lol. She has 2 boys and myself; I am her only girl. I remember as a little girl my mom would always ask me to do her hair (style and apply box dye) or would let me do her makeup. Even though, I wasn’t sure what I was doing I swore I was doing just fine. My mom likes to remind me that I never liked babies or barbies I always preferred makeup. During sleepovers I was always the friend either doing nails, facials, cutting/styling hair or doing makeup. I want to say in sophomore/junior year of high school I remember my AP Spanish teacher once telling me ” Cynthia put up your makeup this isn’t beauty school”. Although, it may seem like I knew I’d someday want to do something in the beauty industry I actually didn’t that was more of a hobby and wanted to study forensics. Two totally different careers! I had enrolled at Georgia Gwinnett college and got accepted, but I overthought it and didn’t think I’d be able to afford college, so I never even attended the first day of school. A year passed by and I happened to be on Facebook and came across an ad promoting Paul Mitchell the beauty school and because I knew I already had a love for beauty I thought I’d give it a try. I called and scheduled a tour to visit and get more information. Before you knew it I had enrolled and started school August 20, 2018.
Five years later, I can now say I’m proud to be a private studio salon owner. I service haircuts. hair color, hair extensions as well as eyebrow lamination. I want to continue expanding my brand little by little and make it a one stop shop. If I had to choose a favorite service that’d be hard because I have 3; I like to do balayages, color corrections and recently I’ve been loving brow lamination. Ive also come to find out that I love this industry and wouldn’t trade it for anything else because my clients not only feel comfortable enough to open up and speak to me while they’re in my chair, but also feel beautiful once I’m done transforming them.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Coming from 2 hair salons I had to unlearn that this industry isn’t as ugly as it seems. You really just have to surround yourself with good people and people who don’t see competition rather than get inspired. I remember having a manager telling me I wouldn’t be successful and said that she had been running a successful business for 30 years so if I wanted to be like her I had to obey her rules and not watch YouTube videos since that is what I used to like to do for inspo.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
On October 23, 2022 I got into a car accident that by the grace of God I survived. However, I did have a sprained ankle and was really sore from the impact, so I couldn’t stand for long. That honestly scared me because not only did I have to reschedule clients, but I didn’t know how long I’d be on bed rest. Also, at my salon suite we pay weekly whether you’re in there working or not. I work for myself therefore I was just stressing out all the bills that were about to hit me hard. I couldn’t go more than 7 days without working so I decided to take it slow and got back to work. I most definitely prayed about it and God is so good I got overflowed with messages on Instagram and became fully booked for November and December.
