We were lucky to catch up with Cyndi Brec recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cyndi , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
There are several reasons why I wrote The Therans Series—writing was a dream that burned within me, and I loved watching Callie, the main character’s life, unfold before my eyes. I also loved the creative process of exploring the character’s journey; in many ways, the story represented unchartered territory.
The idea for The Therans story world developed when I extensively researched legends and history and realized using an actual historical site made everything more personal. I was familiar with the historical mill as we owned it at the time, and that strong connection created a powerful urge to express the story. I fell in love with Callie’s story, flaws, and awkwardness at controlling her powers. Her complicated imperfections made her so believable and relatable.
Writing the series was therapeutic and adventurous in a weird, fantastical way. Some stories burn inside because the storyteller wants to leave a legacy; for me, it was cathartic—the desire to give voice to a story that had never been told is a powerful driving force.
Cyndi , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an avid reader turned writer with a degree in Recreational Therapy. I am a young adult fantasy romance author who penned The Therans Series.
I got into the writing industry because I’ve poured my imagination into crafting intricate plots, weaving characters into existence, and sculpting two entirely different worlds within one book series, spanning five books, in preparation for a book launch in 2025—and I never gave up on my dream.
I am a creative wordsmith who weaves tales that transcend the boundaries of reality, enriched by the unique lens of a dyslexic novelist. I dream big, live passionately, and don’t let my disabilities get me down—Christ, family, and friends are everything. Writing is my voice, sharing my deepest thoughts, and my way of connecting with others.
Ahead of publication, I’ve snagged several endorsements from notable authors: Jonas Saul, the best-selling author of the Sarah Robers Series; Alan Warren, NBC News Radio Host/Producer/Author; Suzy Vadori, Author and critic of The Fountain Series, three-time Aurora Awards Finalist; Peter Okonkwo, author and literary critic; and Dom Brightmon from Going North Podcast. I’ve also secured a 5-star rating from Readers’ Favorite.
I am learning never to give up: resilience is your greatest ally.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Life is hard, but we get stronger through adversity. I’ve tried to turn my challenges into strengths, but I know I can’t change who I am. Living with dyslexia has taught me coping skills, embracing my strengths, and fostering a positive mindset. I’ve always had strong visual skills and picturing scenes unfold in my mind, but putting it on paper or typing it into the computer without making a mess of it was not easy—and still isn’t easy.
I found a group of writing friends who have played a crucial supportive role. We recognize each other’s strengths and challenges—and I have the best husband in the world. Ultimately, I recognized it and embraced it for the superpower it is! Life is a journey of self-discovery, where challenges should become an opportunity for growth, accomplishment, and realization.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’ve been able to break free from the world—writing has allowed me to explore unchartered territory and share it with others who may like fantasy. There’s power in writing, sharing your voice and perspective, and enriching the lives of others. Ultimately, I love watching scenes unfold in a story, backing my character into a corner, and seeing how they escape bad situations. The character’s journey is so important, whether in real life or on the pages of a book!
