Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Curtis Greene . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Curtis , thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
All my life I’ve been more misunderstood than understood. Some say it’s because I’m the youngest of my siblings. But I say that it’s because having my biological father that lived with me who was a great provider and coming from a family of means during my childhood made my development very difficult. I was faced with stigmas inside my family on my mother’s side because my cousin’s fathers were absentee. And my other cousins the most familiar ones lived in poverty because their father who was once well-to-do got turned out on drugs before I was even born. Though my familiar cousin’s father which is also my biological cousin stuck around his ability to provide for them was greatly diminished and my father took his place and did even better than him leading them to resent me as a result though they love me as well. I fought all the time in school my referral folder was filled with infractIons it was thick. I had to prove I wasn’t a punk. I was almost kicked out of all Detroit public schools in 1994 for punching my assistant principal in her stomach for smacking me it my face from behind with her folder. I was not supposed to be in the hallway at that time and I thought she was the safeties who were my enemies. Just recently I had beaten up one of their leaders badly for putting his finger in my pizza when we got to the playground and the lunch aid stopped tens of them from jumping me as a result of my victory . The fighting slowed down but it was a constant throughout my school years. I graduated highschool and went to the streets after the post office did not workout. After being in the streets for five years I when back to college for the third time via the “Flip the Script Program” headed by Keith Bennet and excelled beyond everyone’s expectations for me. I earned 18 awards and nine doctoral credits in organizational leadership management. Some said I’d be dead by 21 they were wrong. I’ve worked on 33 campaigns from local to presidential level. 28 of which I won. Most recently President Biden and Shri Thanedar’s campaign for congress. I’ve recently won a national song writing contest for my genre “Outlaw Music” out of 250 people nationwide of all races I placed 5th. The organization is called “The World Songwriting awards” and the verse was acapella that’s right without a beat. I’ve also written an autobiography I self-published called “From Darkness to Light Autobiography of Curtis Christopher Greene” available on Amazon and other participating retailers. Also two poetry books “Proverbs of a Troubled Soul-Wisdom is Pain” and “Confessions of my Heart- Unshakable union” also available on Amazon and participating retailers. I may be on my way to Washington D.C. or downtown Detroit for my next adventure. My story is one of perseverance and never giving up no matter how bad things are. I love to prove naysayers wrong and teach people as well that’s why I became an ordained minister in 2013. And I started Phoenix Entertainment in March of this year but currently I just have my legal documentation for my business. It will be my greatest success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It really was a whirlwind kind of thing. Many of my closest friends are dead, imprisoned , and others moved to other states. I wanted to make my mark on the world as my great-Uncle Eddie Wingate jr. had did with his record label “Golden World Records” of which he sold to Barry Gordy in the 1960s for over a million dollars. My uncle was a great inspiration to from the first time I met him in 1994 to his death in 2006. He showed me greatest is to be strived for because it’s too easy to be mediocre that’s not the path of one who believes in their purpose and will fight their dream.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After the death of my beloved father, best friends Tank and Jerry, and my girl Jasmine I was beaten inside. But my faith in God kept me from surrendering to depression though I was hateful and bitter for quite a while I got over it. I made the best of the challenges I was given through faith and it made me a person prepared to deal with the best and worse that life has to offer. Now that I’ve healed from that the possibility of failure does not discourage me from pushing toward my dreams. Anyone that that feels that life is not worth it should tap in to positive spiritual energy it created a synergy that cannot be understood by mortals and it will give you all the strength you’ll ever need to fight and be victorious.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the people in their city should their support artists who come from diverse backgrounds that most people don’t quite understand. They are the most creative because they have the most to talk about. This will help them to thrive in all facets of media social media as well as traditional news media. It will be a great help to the artists and creatives by getting support in their native land. To be supported more by family as well. It feels good to have that support from family but I haven’t really had much of that myself because I chose a different path than them.
