We were lucky to catch up with Curbside Pickup recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Curbside thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My name is Keon and I”m one half of the Curbside Pickup Duo, along with my brother Nate. I have always wanted to be in entertainment since I was in elementary school. I really didn’t have a direction on what part of the entertainment field I wanted to pursue, but I knew thats what I wanted. In my late twenties into my thirties I acted in several stage plays written and Directed by me. I never liked the audition process so I decided to remove myself from that process and write myself into different roles. I loved being on stage, but in 2010 I put a hold on theater when I went to work for the Boys & Girls Clubs. I wanted to devote myself to helping change the lives of the kids and teenagers that I was responsible for. Fast forward seven years and I began to miss acting and writing. I knew I wanted to get back in entertainment, but I didn’t want to be on stage anymore. I felt that it was time for a different phase. I was a huge fan of the show Diners Drive-ins and Dives, and wanted to create a show of that nature. The only way I knew how I could make that happen was through the Youtube platform. I asked my brother Nate to join me and he agreed. So in 2018 Curbside Pickup was born, and we have been going strong ever since. Since that time we have changed the structure of the show several times, and we’ve both grown a lot. One thing is for sure, the world will know Curbside Pickup as a brand name.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So as it was stated earlier we are content creators and our product is digital content. We began our journey back in 2018 on youtube, and had to learn the entire process of being a “Youtuber”. Many people think is extremely easy to create a successful Youtube channel, but they don’t realize how much work actually goes into it. You have to learn how to edit, how to create interesting videos, what works and what doesn’t work. So it does take a lot of work, but we are proud that we had enough discipline go through the learning process. Because we stayed the course and never gave up even when things didn’t look liked it was pointless to continue, we landed several television commercial spots with the Del Taco corporation. Getting booked for these commercials simply because they liked our Youtube content is our proudest moment. Reason being is our channel is growing slowly, and at times was a bit discouraging because we would see other channels growing faster. However, landing these commercials for us was validation that even though we didn’t have tons of followers, we have great content and now millions will see us on TV. So the major lesson in all of this is focus on making a great product (For us its great content), keep moving forward even when you get discouraged, and NEVER give up. It will happen, just keep putting in the work.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Most people get into the creative world because it makes them happy, and they love doing what they do. While that is a big part of it for us one of the major rewarding parts for us making others happy. Over the years we have gotten countless comments about how watching our channel helps to brighten their day. More recently we received a comment from a loyal subscriber saying that she was being tested for breast cancer. She said that it was a stressful time for her, but watching our videos helped her get through the stress of it all. Thats what it’s all about, putting smiles on peoples faces. Sure there is other content and other creators out there, but we feel like because we are our authentic selves the viewers can really fell the love and appreciation that comes through the screen. When you can brighten someones day, thats the reward.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal of any creative is to be able to make a living off of their art, and we fall right in line with that. Sure you would make art and content for free (which is what most creatives do), but at some point you want to make money from it. We have a few goals that we will achieve. One goal is to have over 1 million Youtube subscribers, and be full-time content creators (Which will happen). The second goal is to have our own show on a streaming service (Which we are working on now). We feel like the more that people can see us, we can put that many more smiles on faces. So if you’re reading this right now go to youtube and subscribe to Curbside Pickup LOL.. No really, go do it. We Love you!
