¡¡¡Curb, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I had always been in music in middle school (Tuba!), and I had hinted that I wanted a guitar. The biggest surprise was when they picked one up from a garage sale because guitar was such a rebel instrument (ha). They paid for lessons, which is super important the first year (so hard), and it kept me going. My mom also has a Christian background that I carry forward. There is so much misinterpreted scripture now, and so many in the church use the Bible to support things that really aren’t in the Bible, and completely overlook the two main rules that the message of Jesus is clear on: Love God, and Love each other. I try to always consider if my work is representing things that are good and shows that I want to spread the love. I do some goofy things, and there are see messages in the Bible that one is to be humble, you can’t take yourself too seriously, if at all!
¡¡¡Curb, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Classic and Alt. Rock are my biggest influence; I’ve always loved the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They have a fun party vibe, but also can pull off sad songs and serious stuff of many different genres. I started getting back into music with a Walmart Song inspiration that is funny, and many consider my best, I focus on funny songs when I play out because humor really grabs attention. The band name “¡¡¡Curb Alert!!!” (in reference to the Craigslist term used to get rid of old appliances) is based on this comedy, and I got “#FloridaMan” and “Amsterdam” leading the way for popular songs that always go over well. I focus on music videos on YouTube for these songs, and some parodies, and use CDBaby to distribute on platforms. But I really don’t want to paint myself into a corner, I have many more “real” songs that are better, IMO, than the funnies. So, I like to have a flexible image to play both.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Providing songs for other people that they like whether if it makes them laugh, or are enjoyable to listen too. I believe our existence here is to discover/learn/understand God and Love each other. it can simply be boiled down to the act of Love… to get along with each other and not cause strife. Offering music that makes people happy or is interesting to listen to, that reveals truth, is really the only reason to make it.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think stay away from the barrage of “reality TV” talent shows. All of these shows really take advantage of earnest musicians. Every backstory seems to show how they have no creative control (i.e. mass-production of music/culture by big business in the name of profit only), it’s like factory-farmed music. Originality and advances in music/culture are stifled with this mechanism. On top of that, the participants generally do not make much money, the money gets funneled to already wealthy celebrities and corporations. Find local original artists at original music venues, open mics, community events. The talent on TV is available in the community.
