We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cultura a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cultura, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
The industry standard for most dance studios is to cater toward the every day dancer/hobbiest. It’s the most profitable and secure route to go. We at Cambio Studio focus our skills and classes toward the dancer/artist interested in making a career out of dance. We also offer a different type of training where instead of offering only choreography classes (classes where you learn a routine) we also offer foundational street style techniques (Yup, Hip Hop has technique just like Ballet). It’s a more difficult and niche lane to drive in but more rewarding in the end. Our goal is to have every dancer that trains at our studio leave well rounded and able to achieve any and all goals they have and to have a long lasting career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I opened Cambio Studio out of a need for better quality industry/street foundational training in South Florida. Most people these days have a peaked interest in dance because of social media and are looking for a quick routine or challenge to post and go viral. I am of the generation where you learned your foundation, your basics, the history, the origin of each style. I come from the generation where you learned to respect Hip Hop, House, Waacking, Voguing, Dancehall, (etc) just like you would Ballet, Modern, and Jazz. Street styles have just as much structure and discipline as classical styles and I wanted to create a place where people could train smart. Train the right way to have a meaningful and successful career in this very saturated dance industry.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Maintain quality! Sometimes we get caught up in keeping up with the joneses but it’s essential to stick to your mission statement and be consistent with quality. I strive to make sure every single teacher at my studio is of a certain standard and imparts lifelong skills and lessons in their classes.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media has been the biggest way to grow clients. Making sure we are consistent with posting and that what we do post is engaging and clearly gives insight on what to expect from each teacher/class.
