We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Crystal Notez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Crystal , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One day a friend of mine suggested I try out for a part in a children’s play. I agreed to do it because it involved me signing new songs to children and I’m a big kid who loves being silly. When I arrived to the audition I was asked to sing and read the script. I totally forgot that the play would require me to act. I never acted before with a script!! However, I always wanted to be in theater, but was too shy to get out of my comfort zone as a Singer. So, of course, I prayed hard, went in and gave my all in the audition. I was amazed when Mrs. Alicia, the creator of the play, chose me to be Coco Star in “Meet Me at the Wave”. Being in that play made me believe in myself more and opened the door to more opportunities that I would have been afraid to go after in the past. That whole experience taught me to put my fears aside and just try. Try whatever I’m interested in pursuing because I may actually get more blessings and opportunities.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Singer/Songwriter/Poet/Actress and Reiki Master. I started singing music when I was six in front of people at my first grade graduation. It was that day I was honored to sing in front of my aunt, Rhythm and Blues Singer/Actress Ruth Brown. I got to see her big, bright smile on her face pleased with me. I always admired her because she was aways busy on a stage!!
In 2012 I started to get more serious with my music and began performing my songs on stage with models. I really enjoyed bringing my songs to life on stage and having the audience understand exactly what I am singing about. I was really getting into my groove and my brand until I realized I was pregnant in 2017 and took a break to take care of my son.
Within the last year I have been working on my album and have decided to release some music this summer. With my music, I like to express what people are afraid to mention and I also like to express positivity. I like to think outside the box and also tell stories within my songs.
As far as acting goes, I love to act a fool on stage and blossom out of my shell. I have also performed in a children’s play called “Meet Me at the Wave” and am acting in another play called the “Amen Corner” in July.
I really enjoy singing and acting and cannot wait till my next opportunity to bless the stage in front of others who love the Arts just as much as I do.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspects of being an artist is seeing and hearing people approve of my work, meet me note for note (musically). It’s rewarding when I see the reaction on their face when I hit certain notes. I get the reaction that something touched them – (non-physically) when I sing a certain song; that means a lot. When I can touch somebody through my voice it means the world to me and I am beyond grateful for each and every opportunity.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to make my journey the best journey I can ever dream and it actually comes true. My goal is to find a career in Music that will financially support more than my needs and wants… my career also supports me mentally, emotionally and also physically because they care about my health and fitness. My goal is to find the perfect career that will also financially support and maintain my son’s education and future college funds and give him a great childhood and future. My goal is to receive the best, all while doing my best!
