We recently connected with Crystal Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Crystal thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
As an artist, I’ve learned the most from interaction. Engaging with art in various forms, attending exhibitions, visiting museums, and participating in workshops are invaluable experiences for any artist. They expose you to different styles, techniques, and ideas that can expand your creative horizons. This has given me a greater insight into what other artists are doing and how I can successfully pave my own path. I recognize that my artistic journey is unique and is a vital lesson. I’ve compared myself to others and this was discouraging and hindered my creative growth. Embracing my uniqueness allowed me to express my authentic voice and create art that is true to myself. I am committed to lifelong learning and growth as an artist and my dedication to self-improvement and exploration is essential for my own artistic development.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a multidisciplinary mixed-media artist with a passion for all things glitter, and my artistic journey began at a very early age. From my early encounters with art, where I delved into the realms of drawing, painting, and collage, I knew that creativity was my true calling. Over the years, my artistic exploration led me down various exciting paths, including graphic design and illustration, which broadened my artistic horizons.
Today, my primary artistic disciplines revolve around painting and sculpture, where I have honed my skills and expertise. My current body of work is a culmination of the knowledge and experiences I have gathered throughout my artistic evolution. I have a deep affinity for celebrating the beauty and strength of black women in my art. In my sculptural paintings, I strive to portray these remarkable individuals in a radiant and celebratory light, paying homage to their Afrocentric essence through intricate details. I focus on elements such as hair, nails, jewelry, and clothing, each telling a unique story of culture and identity.
In my creative process, I utilize an eclectic range of materials to bring my visions to life. This includes the dazzling allure of glitter, the tactile depth of molding paste, the shimmering brilliance of rhinestones, and the unconventional textures of insulation foam, tulle, metal mesh, and beads. These materials serve as my artistic vocabulary, allowing me to express the rich complexity of my subjects in innovative and captivating ways.
My artistic journey has been a deeply personal one, and I take immense pride in the body of work I have crafted thus far. Each piece is a labor of love, a reflection of my life experiences, and a tribute to the resilience and beauty of black women. Through my art, I strive to share stories, evoke emotions, and celebrate the uniqueness of every individual. It is a journey of continuous growth, self-expression, and a profound connection to the world around me, and I am excited to see where it leads me next.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to express myself authentically and connect with others on a deep emotional level. Through my art, I have the power to communicate my thoughts, feelings, and unique perspectives to the world. This act of self-expression is incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to share my inner world, experiences, and stories with others.
Moreover, the impact my art can have on people’s lives is a source of great satisfaction. When my work resonates with someone, evokes emotions, or sparks inspiration, it can potentially create a profound connection between me as the creator and my audience. Knowing that my art can make someone feel validated, and loved, or bring joy to others is a deeply rewarding experience.
Lastly, the sense of accomplishment that comes from seeing my artistic evolution and the tangible results of my dedication is another rewarding aspect. Knowing that I have put my heart, soul, and life experiences into my art and witnessing its evolution over time is what keeps me going.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Supporting artists, creatives, and fostering a thriving creative ecosystem is essential for the enrichment of culture and society as a whole. Here are several ways in which I think society can best support artists and contribute to a vibrant creative community:
1. Investing in arts education and ensuring that arts education is accessible to all, from an early age through higher education. This in my opinion helps nurture talent and develop a well-rounded creative population. I was blessed with having a plethora of art classes in high school and I think every school should have an arts program.
2. Create affordable and accessible studio spaces for artists and creatives to work and collaborate. This can be especially crucial in expensive urban areas. Also feeling the energy of other creatives in a space can help with workflow and production of work.
3. Support marketing and promotional efforts for artists and creatives, helping them reach wider audiences and potential buyers. I’ve worked with galleries that have done an excellent job of promoting me and my work as an artist and it has helped immensely.
