Crystal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

I want to share a life-changing risk I took, one that stemmed from my battle with sensitive skin. Growing up, I felt like I was living in a bubble, surrounded by products that triggered my allergies. Simple things—like soaps, lotions, detergents, and even outdoor elements became sources of constant anxiety. Each time I tried a new product, it often disappointed me, as my skin would react painfully and irritably. As I entered adulthood, my sensitivities grew stronger, leaving me frustrated and isolated in my search for effective skincare solutions.

Fast forward to 2020, and I had just founded Fancy Wax & Body Wraps Day Spa. It was an exciting time but also incredibly challenging. Just as I started establishing my business, the world was thrown into chaos with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fear and uncertainty loomed over everyone, creating a daunting environment for any new venture. Yet, amid this uncertainty, I realized that I had a unique opportunity to address a need that was all too familiar to me: a skincare line for those with sensitivities.

Despite the pervasive uncertainty and anxieties brought on by the global lockdown, I summoned the courage to take a leap of faith. I created a complete skincare line that was vegan, paraben-free, gluten-free, phthalate-free, and not tested on animals. My goal was to develop products that anyone, regardless of their skin type or sensitivities, could trust and use. The decision came with notable and meaningful risks that impacted my journey and played a role in my development. This was a significant emotional risk; what if no one wanted these products? What if they didn’t work? The fear of failure was daunting, but the thought of helping others like me kept me moving forward.

The next two years were a whirlwind of dedication and testing. I spent countless hours researching ingredients, formulating products, and conducting tests to ensure each item was safe and effective. There were moments of doubt when I questioned whether this was the right path. But every time I thought of those who struggled to find reliable skincare solutions, I felt a renewed sense of purpose.

When I finally launched the line, I held my breath. To my immense relief and joy, the response was overwhelming. People embraced the products with open arms, sharing their experiences of finally finding something that worked for their sensitive skin. I received heartfelt messages from customers expressing gratitude for creating a line they could trust that didn’t compromise quality or safety.

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for taking that risk during such an unpredictable time. It wasn’t just about creating a skincare line; it was about fostering a community of individuals who felt understood and supported in their skincare journeys. This journey taught me that the most significant risks sometimes lead to the most meaningful outcomes. By trusting my instincts and passion, I transformed my relationship with skincare and helped others find relief and confidence in their skin.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?

Beyond training and knowledge, empathy and relationship-building are essential for success in the skincare and wellness industry. Understanding clients’ needs, concerns, and individual journeys fosters trust and loyalty. By cultivating strong relationships, we create a welcoming environment where clients feel safe and valued, which is crucial for their overall experience. Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?

Two resources that have significantly shaped my entrepreneurial philosophy are “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek and “The E-Myth Revisited” by Michael E. Gerber. Sinek’s concept of identifying and communicating your “why” has been crucial in helping me focus on the deeper purpose behind my business. It reminds me that my mission is not just to provide services but to create a lasting, meaningful impact on my clients’ lives.

Gerber’s “The E-Myth Revisited” has reshaped my approach to building systems and processes that allow my business to grow and scale. His insights on working on the industry, rather than just in it, have been invaluable in helping me develop strategies for long-term sustainability.

In addition to these books, I stay current through online courses on platforms like Skillshare and Coursera, where I explore topics in business management and personal development. Attending industry events like IECSC and the International Congress of Esthetics and Spa each year also ensures I remain updated on the latest services, training, and products while earning essential continuing education credits.
