Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Crystal Mallett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Crystal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I often reflect on the pivotal moment when I decided to pursue my dream of becoming an Entrepreneur. Throughout my upbringing, the desire to work for myself was always a part of me, and my passion for hair styling had been a constant presence. However, it wasn’t until 2019 that these two worlds combined. I took the bold step of leaving my full-time corporate job to establish myself as a Business Owner. Today, I proudly serve as the Co-Owner of STUDIO23 Hair and Nail Aesthetics Salon in Upstate NY, while simultaneously building a successful career as a Freelance Hairstylist based in New York. Without a doubt, taking this risk has been the best decision of my life.
Crystal, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The core of my business, brand, services comes from my passion for hair. My journey of hair styling began at the age of 7, after being introduced to the world of beauty by my Grandmother, who managed a Beauty Supply Store back in the day. I will never forget the day she brought my Sister and I to work and we were allowed to choose one item in the store for free. I chose a simple wooden black bristle hair brush. That hair brush was a significant starting point for my love of hairstyling. I was captivated by it! More importantly it provided me with a creative outlet for myself and to share with others. I began with learning how to style/ braid my own hair, then extending to my family, and friends. The rest, as they say, is history.
But, I think what I am most proud of is my ability to create. Even when I am not feeling 100%, I manage to show up for my clients and create the styles that they desire. It’s a gift that I don’t take for granted and I am grateful that I get to share that with others.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
A strategy I feel that is important to growing clientele is to be a versatile hairstylist with multiple skill sets. As a professional hairstylist I made it my mission to learn how to style all hair types, textures, and lengths, as a way to grow my services and clientele. To this day, I take pride in learning, and innovating my skills to continue to grow as a hairstylist and connect with clients with in the beauty industry.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I love to connect with new clients from social media. Especially instagram. It’s a great way for clients to view my work, and gain insight into my personality and style. Also, I love reaching out to potential clients and artists who I am interested in working with, through social media. I received a lot of exciting opportunities through this way of connecting.
