We recently connected with Crystal Leffel and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Crystal thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
All it takes to be successful is a dream and hard work! Photography wasn’t my first career. I picked up a camera with no idea how to use it, learned as I went and kept (and still do) work hard at learning more, getting better and staying inspired. Following your source of inspiration, serving clients well & continually growing is the key to building a successful, sustainable and happy business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a wedding and motherhood photographer based in the Denver, Colorado area. I service both couples & families throughout Denver and Colorado. (and beyond) Most of my wedding take place in our beautiful mountains including Vail, Aspen, Steamboat, etc. I am proud to offer my clients an experience that sets me apart. I want to walk them through their experience with me providing professional advice from wardrobe to final artwork selections to ensure their investment is protected and they get everything out of the experience they can. I am proud to offer heirloom artwork for their and future generations to enjoy. I’m so blessed to have a business built around some of the most exciting seasons of life, and with that give my clients tangible memories to walk away with.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Starting a photography business is great in a sense that you can keep your costs pretty low. I started with the minimum; a starter camera, lens & computer and editing software. As my business grew I wasn’t able to reinvest back into my business to acquire better equipment and other essentials. The first few years a lot of the money I made went back into my business whilst I was working a full time job. Now that I work full time in my business and have a steady flow of revenue I budget every year for new equipment and business costs.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

It’s also important to show your face so your client or potential client can connect with you. Social Media can be such a free valuable marketing tool to take advantage of.
