We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Crystal Knight a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Crystal thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
Thought out live there will be many challenges to face but one thing I’ve learned about this industry is that you have to be open to learn new things. New techniques, new products, learn to meet new people. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t know or if you are unsure about something always ask questions.
If you plan something and it doesn’t go as planned always remember it’s ok you can come up with different plan and still achieve your goals. I think its a good idea to plan for two types of goals a stretch goal and a realistic goal. Meaning if your first plan doesn’t come together it’s great to have a second opinion as a backup in case anything changes.
Crystal, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Crystal Knight and I am a Hair stylist, Makeup Artist and Salon Owner. I’ve been in this career for over twenty years and I still enjoy doing what I do. For as long as I could remember I’ve always been into playing dressup. I would take my baby dolls change their hair and thier clothing. During highschool I would do all of my friends hair, my mom and grandma hair and I realized I really liked doing this. So at the age of 15 I went to my parents and told them I want to be a hairstyle and one day I want to have my own hair salon. From there I started my first business. I would go to my friends houses and do their hair. Often times I would also do their mom’s or grandmother hair if they lived in my neighborhood or they would come to my parents house and I would do they hair for money in which that’s how it all began.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been word of mouth and being consistent. Within a 15-year time frame, I’ve maintained a client’s with a loyal customer base that has grown with my business throughout the years.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Moving to Dallas from New Orleans during the time of hurricane Katrina. I realized nothing is promise and you have to work hard for everything you want to accomplish in life. That experience put the drive in me to set goals for everything I want to achieve no matter what the circumstance may look like if you stay focused anything is possible.
