We were lucky to catch up with Crystal J Freeman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Crystal J, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents who embraced me for who I truly was. They allowed me the freedom to explore my own path, even when it diverged from their own visions for my future. From a young age, I was drawn to the arts, captivated by colors, melodies, and stories that seemed to speak directly to my soul. While my parents may not have always understood my artistic passions, they never hesitated to support me.
Their love was a steady anchor through the turbulence of adolescence and beyond. They encouraged me to pursue my dreams, never demanding that I conform to anyone else’s expectations. Instead, they celebrated my individuality and creativity. Even when I made mistakes along the way, they were there with open arms, ready to guide me back on course without judgment.
In their home, I was never made to feel like I needed to apologize for being myself. They respected my need for solitude at times, understanding that creativity often blossoms in moments of quiet reflection. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to take risks, to explore the unknown, and to embrace the uncertainties that come with pursuing artistic endeavors.
Through their unwavering support and unconditional love, my parents taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, self-expression, and the power of acceptance. They showed me that true love means allowing someone to grow into their own person, free from constraints and expectations. Today, as I continue to follow my artistic dreams, I carry with me the profound gratitude for parents who not only allowed me to be me but celebrated me.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Crystal J. Freeman, a textile and performing artist with a lifelong passion for creativity. My journey began at the tender age of five when I would sneak behind the couch to sing, nurturing a love for performance that has only grown stronger over the years. At ten, I picked up crochet, although I didn’t truly master it until I reached adulthood. The arts have played a crucial role in my life, particularly as a way to navigate my severe anxiety, allowing me to express myself and push through fear. As a professional actor and a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association, I find my greatest joy on stage. My experience spans musical theatre and teaching, where I get to inspire others while sharing my love for the performing arts. Beyond acting, I also have a passion for crafting, which led me to start a small business creating t-shirts, hats, knits, and sewn pieces.
Through my artistic endeavors, I aim to create unique garments that not only reflect individual style but also bring joy to those who wear them. Whether it’s a cozy crochet piece or a custom t-shirt, my work is designed to make people feel good, inside and out. I believe that art and creativity can uplift and inspire, and I strive to address the needs of my clients by providing them with garments that enhance their self-expression and confidence. My mission is to create pieces that resonate on a personal level, making each person feel special and valued.
What sets me apart is my holistic approach to art. I integrate my experiences as a performer with my skills as a textile artist, fostering a unique connection with my audience and clients. My commitment to making people feel good—whether through a conversation, a performance, or a handmade piece of clothing—is at the core of everything I do. I am incredibly proud of the impact my work has had on others. Whether it’s receiving heartfelt feedback from someone who felt more confident in a garment I created or inspiring a student in the performing arts, these moments fuel my passion and reaffirm my mission to spread joy through creativity.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that I am deeply dedicated to my craft and genuinely care about the people I create for. My goal is to bring a sense of comfort, joy, and empowerment through my art. I look forward to connecting with you and sharing in this creative journey together!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that success should be celebrated rather than feared. We often hear about the anxiety surrounding failure, but we rarely discuss how crippling the fear of success can be. With success comes a great deal of responsibility, and for someone like me, that can feel overwhelmingly daunting.
Recently, I was diagnosed with ADHD, and this revelation has led me on a challenging yet necessary journey of self-discovery. I’ve come to realize that my fear of success stems from a deep-seated anxiety about what it entails—managing expectations, maintaining momentum, and stepping into the spotlight. While I thrive on interaction and connection with others, my neurodivergent brain sometimes makes the world feel like an insurmountable obstacle, causing me to retreat into the safety of my home, avoiding the things and people I love.
For a long time, I struggled to understand why I would suddenly stop engaging with friends or abandon activities that once brought me joy. It was as if my mind was playing tricks on me, convincing me that I wasn’t worthy or capable of the success I so desperately desired. I felt a sense of shame for my struggles, yet a larger part of me recognized the importance of sharing my experiences.
The lesson I’ve learned is to embrace my diagnosis rather than hide from it. I’ve realized that having open conversations about my neurodivergence can be incredibly powerful—not just for my own healing, but for others who might be grappling with similar challenges. By sharing my journey, I can help demystify ADHD and create a sense of community and understanding. This lesson has reminded me that vulnerability is not a weakness; it’s a strength that can pave the way for connection and support.
Ultimately, I am learning to embrace the complexities of my mind and the responsibilities that come with success. I’m committed to being open about my experiences because you never know who you might help along the way.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the profound connection I forge with others through my work. There’s a unique magic in transforming thoughts and emotions into tangible creations that resonate with people on a personal level. Each time someone connects with my art—whether it’s a garment that makes them feel confident, a performance that stirs their emotions, or a simple conversation that sparks joy—I feel a deep sense of fulfillment.
I find immense joy in being an inspiration to little kids who look like me. Witnessing their “aha” moments when they finally grasp a technique they’ve been working on for weeks is truly heartwarming. Those moments are reminders of the impact art can have on young minds, igniting their creativity and self-expression.
Additionally, I love seeing the look on a business owner’s face when they first see their company logo beautifully branded on a shirt, bag, or hat. It’s a powerful affirmation of their vision and hard work, and I’m honored to play a part in bringing their ideas to life.
Art has the power to transcend barriers and touch hearts, and witnessing the impact of my creations is an extraordinary gift. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my craft can uplift spirits, inspire self-expression, and create moments of beauty in everyday life. The ability to share my journey and experiences through my artistry is not just a privilege; it’s a calling that continually enriches my life and the lives of those around me.
