We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Crystal Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Its been SO long now that I have done photography that I forget if its 12, 13 or 14 years.
With time, I have come to not even worry with what sets me apart from competitors. Now, I focus on what my dream is and what others dreams are… I have given up on worrying about followers on social media as well.
There are SO many of us artists that honestly, should have a bigger following. But the lack of followers or hundreds or thousands of likes does not lessen the impact we have to the people we serve. That has been a breakthrough for me for my mental health and growing as an artist. I am MOST proud of serving people.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new clients is word of mouth. Having a client and their family/friends share my photography means the world to me as a small business owner. In the past, I had paid for marketing via Instagram and Facebook, but it did not generate any hits for me, so I stopped that quickly.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started this business as a photographer not knowing much about anything. It has grown into my career. 16 months ago, I quit my corporate job to do my photography fulltime. While it has been scary; it’s forced me to pay more attention to my finances as well as photo sessions trends. In the past, I had not really kept up with that because I had a fulltime corporate job. I used my photography income as “just for fun” funds. Now that it’s how I eat, drink and pay bills, I have had to be more aware of where my money goes. I’ve also learned that I can’t discount my work like I had in the past because I am worth it.
