Crystal, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

From an incredibly young age I always loved to have my nails done. Whether it be playing with different colors, wearing glue on nails or teaching myself how to do my own acrylics I knew I wanted to start my own business and open my own salon as a nail tech. Highschool offered educational programs through our school and I went on obtain my license at the age of 17 and start my own business by renting a space in a small hair salon in my hometown.

After college and moving from upstate NY to Little Rock, Arkansas, I was given the opportunity to work for a beauty business that offered a wide range of products from nail care, polish removers and bath & body kits. I absolutely loved the business and working in Product Development to bring new products to market. I was working long days and late nights as the Marketing and Creative director for the company and as crazy as it sounds I dreamt the concept of a one-step, on-the-go, gel application system and mocked it up the next morning to present to my CEO in 2014. That same year I was given the opportunity to present this product to Walmart, but with gel polish being so NEW and only available in the nail salons and I believe Walmart was uneasy about taking the risk of bringing a NEW product to market without any feedback or sales to support signing a contract with us.

I refused to give up on the product and spent the next few years learning about patents and piecing together all the things necessary to start a business to launch this innovative product into the world! I believe hard work, discipline and refusing to give up on a product I so strongly believed in is what made this product come to life in 2020 during the middle of a pandemic. The timing was incredibly scary, but we made it happen!

I knew individuals today simply did not have the time or money to waste on expensive salon visits or lengthy 3 step gel systems. Most gel polish systems on the market were inconvenient glass bottles, lengthy and tiresome steps, and of course large bulky uv/led lamps that required you to be plugged into an outlet. To combat the time, expensive price tag, and inconvenience, we created an on-the-go gel manicure system that’s spill-proof, non toxic, and cordless.

I am most proud of dreaming up a product that has helped women maintain their sanity by saving the one thing we all need more of and that is TIME. It wasn’t easy to bring a new product to market, there were several highs, lows and even doubts not knowing if this product was going to stick or not. It was a risk not knowing how to make this product make an impression in the already over saturated and competitive industry, but we just took it one day at a time and made it happen through networking and have the right people in our path to guide us in the right direction.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

At the time I was repairing my credit and neither myself or my business partner were in the position to take out a loan, so the business was funded with the inheritance from my father’s estate.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

A hard lesson I had to learn was to definitely listen to your gut and pay attention to red flags when it comes to doing business and partnerships. Trusting your intuition is critical for any business owner and ignoring signs of instability within others and trusting them to do the right thing was huge mistake I made and it ended up costing me financially.
