We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Crystal Goeringer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Crystal below.
Hi Crystal, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The cookier, baker, pastry world has really exploded in the last couple years. With an over flooded market you really have to be competitive in making your treats stand out, while also tasting good. You have to be priced right, but make sure you charge your worth as well.
Crystal, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Crystal owner, message responder, social media creator, baker, decorator, packager, and delivery person of Cookies Confections by Crystal. My mom is a rock star of helping with the dishes for Cookies Confections. I’ve always had a passion for baking and decorating cookies, and five years ago I took that passion and turned it into a business, I work full time in addition to running Cookies Confections, a pastry chef at a local bakery, and I credit what I’ve done with my cookie business in helping me achieve this position as pastry chef. Cookies Confections specializes in decorated cookies and French macarons. Every cookie set I do, I’m always like oh that was so fun or oh that was a favorite design, and it’s true. I love making and decorating treats for others to enjoy and I get such a rush out of creating an edible piece of artwork. I’ve always been into art and was a graphic design major in college. I knew when I graduated that I wasn’t going to be happy designs logos, but now I’ve found the right creative outlet for my art.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is hard, but it’s the most viewed media to get your name and product out there. So much has changed with algorithms and making reels versus just posting photos. Being a person that has a full time job and then runs a business on the side, I sometimes struggle with having enough content and I haven’t even attempted to do reels. It’s a constant battle when posting, will people see this awesome set that I did last week or will I get just a few likes. I just try to post as much content as I can, and I find that my stories have higher views usually than my posts. Although I believe that word of mouth is still and always will be the best way to spread your name and product out in your community.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I would be no where in this industry without the help and support of my family and friends. They were there for me early on and still are today. They helped get my name out there by always sharing my holiday pre-sales, ordering cookies from me when I was first starting out and my cookies tasted good but didn’t always look the best. Looking back on cookies I did early on, they had a lot of love for me to order some of those options. They knew I had a good product and supported me no matter what.
