We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Crystal Corpuz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Crystal below.
Crystal, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
It’s actually a cute little story, so originally my business name was lashes by crystal c. I had that name for about 5 years but I felt that my business needed a new name and revamp. So one day my husband and I were driving and he happened to notice an empty shop for rent in a shopping center. He mentioned that the shopping center had a nail spa and hair salon but no lash spot. We had both talked about one day having my own store front business and how he would help me manage it. He then said “all you need is lashes, and this shopping center would have it all.” Once he said that, it just kind of clicked that should be my new business name. I told him that was actually a cute and catchy and would be perfect. I really owe it to him for helping me on that one.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m 36 years young, I’m married and I have 3 children. I used to work in the medical field for a few years before I going into the beauty industry. Family is very important to me and at the time I had 2 children, so working in a medical office 9 to 5 was becoming stressful as I wanted to spend more time with my family. So my mother in law is the one who mentioned that I should get in the lash industry, as she herself was an esthetician who did lashes. She helped me find a school and mentored me until I was ready to be on my own. Everyday after school I would go to her spa and she would train me. Once I finished and I passed my state board exam, I began working for my mother in law. After a few years I was ready to be on my own and here I am 10 years later, still lashing and I owe it all to her for helping me.
The lashes I do are known for looking natural. Of course if a client is looking for a more glam look I’m always more than happy to oblige. As I always say lashes should enhance your beauty, not overshadow it. Many of my clients always tell me that they get compliments on how amazing their lashes look, it’s really one of the best things to hear as a lash artist that your work is appreciated. One of things that keep my clients coming back is how the retention of their lashes can last up to 3 weeks. Of course I always tell them that it takes 2 to make it happen, with proper lash care and my application.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
I would have to say my biggest near death moment for business would have to be when covid started shutting down businesses. I know we all thought we’d be closed for a few weeks but I didn’t anticipate it would be for months. Rent still had to be paid, so you can imagine how hard it was. I lost quite a few clients, so when I was able to open up again it was like starting from scratch. It took a few years to be able to get back to where I was pre covid.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Definitely word of mouth, having my clients referring people they know to me. I’ve also done online ads, just getting yourself out there letting potential clients see your work. Even if no one responds to your ads you’d be surprised that weeks down the line I’ll have new clients come to me and tell me that my ads stuck with them. That they weren’t ready at the time but always kept me mind for when they were ready to come. You can’t give up, even if you think no one is interested because I guarantee you will have someone who wants to come to you.
