We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Crystal Buckley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Crystal below.
Hi Crystal , thanks for joining us today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
It is heart warming, when I look back at where I am coming from to where I am today. I was once this reserved girl, who never spoke about things I was/ had gone through.Until I became a Domestic violence Victim. And then seeing how much it had affected my whole life, also realizing this was happening to so many young women. I then realized God allowed me to go through that season so I could come speak out and about it.. I am a 36 year old Nurse by profession. But an advocate at heart. From my own experiences at a early age (20s).I had to battle, knowing I will have these memories to live with for the rest of my life. I was heart broken and battered, not knowing how I would carry on.But God had me where I was to be, because out of that I birthed a book, became a motivational speaker, mentor, and became shoulder to many. So Today I stand to say Domestic Violence is Not OK!!!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 36 year old nurse, from the beautiful Island of Jamaica, but currently residing in the Cayman Islands. I Enjoy worshipping, reading, writing, sight seeing, and all things nature, but most of ALL. I enjoying speaking to young ladies, especially about Domestic violence, (from a victim point of view). I got married at a young age and experienced abuse of all sorts to the point where I had to run away. I had refrained from speaking about it for a couple years, as I had to try to understand what had happened to me, (this is how I became a motivational speaker). So now I speak from experiences and based off researches. Then from this a book was birthed. (From Broken From Redeemed) which narrates the story of a woman who went through an abusive relationship as well and escaped and started to flourish. I wrote this book, not know some of the things I wrote was me actually speaking them into my life. So this is what I’m really known for, I am happy I went through this because I have become so involved in advocating and speaking, I was recently awarded in Jamaica in recognition for my contribution towards bringing awareness to Domestic Violence.. Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My own book From Broken To Redeemed. This is like a 1st hand guide, it gives strategies of how one can move away from anything that is hurting them (though challenging). Also how one can invite God into their situation, for surely, he will also give you the strategies you need to nagivate. As I previously said when I wrote this book I did not know I was speaking things into my life which still amazes me today. Also I read the book called A Woman after God’s own heart, it taught me patience, devotement, courage and how to accept the things I couldn’t change, but move forward and be intentional about the things I wanted. There were scriptures that spoke to me and helped me nagivate in my down times. The one that stood out the most was Isaiah 43 vs 2.. even until today It is still carrying me. “When thou passeth through the waters, I will be with thee, and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee, when thou walkest through the fire, thou shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” This tell me that God will always be with me.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What built my reputation was the fact that I speak from a place of realness and experiences to date people has complimented me for my bravery On how I tell my story and encourage others. But the truth is, God placed this ministry inside of me, though it took going a rough season before it was birthed.
Also I try to be real and not judgemental, because I know where I am coming from and what I have been through, so I am in no position to judge. So those are some of the things that has molded and shaped my character.
