We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Crxss Bonex a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Crxss thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I’ve been a constant creative my whole life but didn’t seriously embrace the creative journey until 4 years ago. I use to work at warehouse jobs until I took a leap of confidence in myself to make myself happy. That started with Robert hodge letting me showdow him and then eventually getting a full time job at Crateworks! Now I’ve been apart of the art community with both my homies as well as the behind the scenes at different museums/ galleries such as MFAH, MENIL, etc. I feel as if I would have understood the reality of just believing in yourself to work towards happiness then I’d be a lot further in my journey then I am now, not to say I’m ungrateful for where I’m at but I could have been happier a lot sooner!

Crxss, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When ever I started to work for crateworks I couldn’t even read a tape measure but my boss Justin gave me a chance of a life time and he took a leap of faith in me! Without that moment I definitely wouldn’t be where I’m at today! A lot of my art work/ craft works with a variety of different mediums such as collage, salt, airbrush, spray paint, etc. the list goes on! I definitely feel as if an artist should explore every avenue before event coming to comfortability within themselves. A lot of times now I make a good chunk of money both from my full time job as well as side installation jobs and some commissions here in there! Regardless on how hard times get and how impossible a task seems I’ll always tackle it one step at a time with full honesty and confidence within myself!

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I truly feel that society does support creatives in a major way. Weather it’s being an activist and expressing yourself or even reposting other artist work on social media to help get attention towards their work! I think as a society we are definitely working towards appreciating art more than ever! Even if we have AI. Some people think it’s a threat towards artist but I think it’s a chance to figure out what truly makes art a human experience/ expression compared to watered down renderings but I feel as if that opinion might change as we see it evolve over time! Who knows it’s crazy time right now in the world!

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I can’t stress this enough but community is the most important part of being an artist. Life is too hard to do things by youself and I know the culture of grinding is important but what’s more important is actually living life. As a creative you need to experience life and allowing the flow to happen. Experience in life is the fuel to making great art. Art is about expressing your life and what you live so people are able to experience something different than themselves. If I could go back to the beginning of my art journey with what i know now I’d tell myself to just enjoy life and the people around you. The grind is there but don’t forget to love yourself and the people around you in the process.
