We recently connected with Cristy Brusoe and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cristy, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
At The BCPR Group, our mission is to champion the underdogs. We’re passionate about representing small businesses and individuals whose stories may not always have the biggest budgets behind them but have immense heart and meaning. As an LGBTQ+ business owner, I’ve never fit the mold of the typical PR agency, and that’s something I’m proud of.
I built this agency to be a space where meaningful stories take center stage. I don’t believe in selling PR services just for profit – I want to help amplify the voices of those making a real difference in their communities, and those whose journeys inspire others. Whether it’s a startup that’s challenging industry norms or an entrepreneur who’s overcome adversity, I’m committed to supporting those who might otherwise be overlooked in the media landscape.
At the core, The BCPR Group exists to give small businesses, nonprofits, and purpose-driven brands the representation they deserve, because I believe that everyone has a story worth telling – no matter the size of their budget.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After spending years working in corporate PR, I realized I wanted something different—something more personal and meaningful. My entrepreneurial spirit kicked in, and I took the leap to start my own agency. What drove me then, and still drives me today, is the desire to work with the underdogs—small businesses, entrepreneurs, and start-ups that are making a real impact but often don’t have the resources or platform to share their stories on a larger scale.
I wanted to create an agency that wasn’t just about profit margins or landing the biggest clients, but about building relationships and amplifying stories that matter. The BCPR Group is a reflection of that. We offer top-tier media relations and strategic PR services, but we also go beyond the basics. We humanize the process. It’s not just about pitching stories—it’s about understanding the heart of the brand and finding creative, authentic ways to connect with audiences.
As a business owner myself, I’ve faced challenges that come with being a smaller agency. Competing against larger firms who have extensive resources was intimidating at first. I used to see not fitting the traditional mold of a PR professional as a limitation, but over time, I’ve come to realize it’s my greatest asset. Being different allows me to approach PR from a fresh perspective, breaking the norms and delivering results through innovative strategies that larger, more rigid agencies may overlook. My experiences as an LGBTQ+ business owner have shaped my approach to PR—I believe in fostering inclusivity and authenticity, both in the stories I tell and the way I run my business.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our work with clients who have meaningful stories to share—whether they’re advocating for social change, launching a product that makes a difference, or simply trying to carve out a space in a competitive market. It’s incredibly rewarding to help these brands gain visibility, not just because of the placements we secure, but because of the lasting relationships we build. We’ve helped our clients get featured in national publications, secure media interviews, and establish themselves as thought leaders in their industries.
At the core of what we do is a genuine desire to see our clients succeed in ways that are true to their mission and values. We’re not a one-size-fits-all agency—we provide tailored strategies for each client, ensuring they stand out for who they are and what they bring to the table. Whether it’s launching a new product, amplifying a cause, or breaking into new markets, The BCPR Group is committed to helping businesses grow through creative, impactful PR solutions.
Ultimately, I want potential clients to know that when they work with us, they’re not just another account—they’re a partner. We care deeply about their success, and we put in the work to make sure their stories are told in a way that resonates and makes a difference.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Absolutely! Here’s a response that aligns with your background:
Yes, my side hustle eventually turned into my full-time career, but it wasn’t part of any grand plan at the start! I actually quit my corporate PR job without much of a blueprint for what I’d do next. I just knew that corporate life wasn’t fulfilling me anymore. I was craving more creativity, more freedom, and a way to work with clients who genuinely inspired me. So, I decided to freelance while I figured out my next steps.
At first, freelancing seemed like a temporary solution while I searched for my next full-time gig. But the more I did it, the more I realized that freelancing was actually very similar to running a business. I was managing my own clients, handling my own projects, and strategizing on how to get results. So instead of looking for another job, I leaned into the freelancing path and fully embraced the idea of being my own boss.
In the beginning, I started small—consulting with other larger firms, lending my expertise on projects, and just getting my feet wet. But a key milestone that really changed the game for me was landing my very first client as a solo PR professional. That moment felt like validation that I could really make this work long-term. From there, I gradually scaled up, securing more clients, building relationships, and expanding my services.
Now, The BCPR Group has grown into a fully functional boutique agency, and I’m incredibly proud of the team I’ve built. We’re a group of passionate professionals who share the same drive to tell meaningful stories and help underdogs succeed. What started as a side hustle out of necessity has turned into something far more fulfilling than I ever imagined. It’s been a journey full of challenges, but also incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been good, old-fashioned, boots-on-the-ground work. From day one, I’ve never been one to sit back and wait for opportunities to fall into my lap. In this business, it’s all about actively seeking out clients, constantly searching for new prospects, and staying ahead of the ebb and flow of work. Platforms like Upwork were really helpful early on, allowing me to connect with businesses in need of PR services. I also make it a point to reach out cold when needed, introduce myself and The BCPR Group, and stay persistent.
Even when we have a full client load, I’m always looking ahead and planning for the next one. You can never get complacent, because the nature of PR means things can change quickly. We’ve also expanded our efforts by optimizing our website, working closely with SEO experts to improve our visibility, and making sure we’re listed on platforms like Clutch and Expertise. These are all essential for increasing our presence and helping potential clients find us more easily.
That said, I know that steady growth takes time. While we’re working toward the goal of having clients come to us organically, I’m never going to stop searching. It’s a combination of staying proactive, staying visible, and staying hungry that keeps us moving forward.
