We recently connected with Cristina Hron and have shared our conversation below.
Cristina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I am currently working on my next single that will be released later this year (2023). Not only is this a shift sonically from my previous work, but also contextually. I have recently come out as openly lesbian, and my music is set to reflect that moving forward. This single is going to be the start of a new era for both myself and my fans, celebrating sapphic love and empowerment. I have been working on this project for over a year, starting with the actual writing of the song in the summer of 2022, leading to the production and filming process a summer later. It is set to have an official music video and an acoustic live performance video. This is the hardest I’ve ever worked for the release of a single song, but it has also meant the most to me personally. Even today in 2023, it’s still hard to come out as queer for many. The song hits really close in this regard, but I’m using my platform to speak out and normalize queerness; to give the LGBTQ+ community representation. I want my music to inspire people to be unafraid, to be unapologetically themselves- and this song is a beacon of just that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Cristina, and I am the glam lesbian pop icon the world didn’t know it needed! I am a Venezuelan-born singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. My days of stardom began fresh out of the womb, singing as I began learning to speak and making music as soon as I had the cognitive ability to do so. At 17, I released my first single on all platforms called “Closer”, and since then I have continued to write, produce, and release music including “Cloud 9” and “In Your System” (available everywhere).
I make fun shiny pop music for the LGBTQ+ baddies and allies; anyone woke, really. I like to think my music is a combination of maybe artists like Ariana Grande and Rina Sawayama. I aim to sell out stadiums singing about girls, self-love, and authenticity,, all while looking good doing it.
Something I want my fans to know about my brand is that one of my main stances is against stigmas within the queer community itself. For example, you can look like me (very girly and femme-presenting), but that doesn’t make you any less gay. No one needs to look or act a certain way in order to be queer. We need to break those stereotypes ourselves, and one of the best ways to promote change is through music!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Go to live shows. I bet there are so many in your area and you just have no idea because you don’t pay attention!!! And I don’t mean by getting those $1K Taylor tickets (bless her heart), but by supporting local artists!!! One of the best things you can do for a rising musician other than streaming their music is supporting them at live events. As a creative, one of the most rewarding things is looking out into the audience at a gig knowing that people are there for me, and that my message and music are spreading further into the world. Performance is one of the most important aspects in growing as an artist, and it’s also a big source of income for them to continue funding their musical endeavors. And also (controversial), don’t waste your money on tik tok influencers who think they’re artists now. Support local (and real) musicians!!!
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I think cowriting is something I failed to recognize as one of the biggest aspects of the music industry before I moved to LA. Pretty much every hit out there was a cowrite, but I had never wanted to get into writing with other people out of fear of comparison and failure. I’m getting better at learning how to trust myself in group settings, but it’s still something I have a lot more to learn about. There is something almost magical about getting with my talented friends and putting not just one, but many genius minds together to create something extraordinary; something I couldn’t have possibly come up with by myself. My problem was almost an egotistical one- I wanted to be able to say I wrote all my songs entirely on my own; I wanted to be good enough to do that. But I’ve come to realize that some of my best projects have been cowrites. In fact, my next single is a cowrite. I wish I had let myself indulge in this earlier in my career, but it’s never too late to start!
