We recently connected with Cristian Gomez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cristian, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I look back at everything I have accomplished over the years, and to this day, I wish I would have started this career sooner rather than later. As a kid, I remember always having a love for music, from playing with my parents’ records and breaking their needles, to using their tape players and even making mixtapes of my favorite songs on a CD for my friends. Probably my biggest regret in all of this is not taking any music lessons to help advance my career. When I went to college, I always went to music festivals and watched some of my favorite artists/DJs, and I would tell myself, ‘I wish I could be doing what they are doing.’ Eventually, I fell ill and was given a second chance at life, so I decided to change my career in my mid-twenties. Fast forward to now, I still feel like I am playing catch-up, trying to prove to myself why I deserve to be where I am today. But overall, I am happy to be doing what I love.
Cristian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The way I started my career was by throwing college parties at the University of Texas in San Antonio. I had a strong connection with many sororities and fraternities, and I used to curate my own parties all the time. Although I had a love for music in my heart, I never thought I would DJ my own parties. When I fell ill, I stopped doing a lot of the partying, but during that downtime, I picked up a Vestax Typhoon MIDI controller and started practicing how to DJ. Eventually, after beating my illness, I began to step out to hang out with friends and slowly started to get some gigs here and there. I had the fortune of meeting a guy named Chris Duano, a great friend and mentor. He showed me the ropes in the nightlife industry, and luckily for me, I still had my relationships from college, so I could invite my friends to come watch me play. Things started getting better and better, and I became an amazing brand for the city of San Antonio. However, I eventually hit a wall where I felt like I couldn’t grow more, since my mentor was always the first person to get a call if they needed a DJ or a new venue opened. So, I decided to take my talents to Austin, TX. At first, it was hard because I didn’t know anybody, but eventually, with the help of some of my close friends, I found new pathways to eventually become one of the top performers in the city of Austin.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I believe one of the most significant things I wish they taught in school is how to start and run a business. For instance, creating an LLC, planning for retirement with your own business, learning how to establish and develop your brand, and acquiring skills to thrive in the age of online marketing. Technology plays a vital role in personal branding. While we may have a passion for what we do, it’s also crucial to consider the business aspect of our branding in order to be successful and pursue our passions. Viewing it from this perspective not only helps advance your career but also enables you to generate a stable income and secure your future.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I believe one of my biggest missions is not only to improve my own future but also to assist others in understanding the struggles I have experienced and helping them in their own journeys. I believe a career is vital for everyone to survive and achieve success, but it is important to recognize that many people do not achieve it on their own. For instance, if it weren’t for the friends I met in college, I don’t think the opportunities I have here in Austin would have arisen. As I continue to grow in this journey, pursuing what I love, I also aspire to support others in their pursuit of passion within the music industry, regardless of which aspect of the business they are involved in.
