Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LaCretia B aka Cre The Creative. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cre The Creative, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I am hoping to build a legacy that empowers others to be a part of the change you want to see, building community with others, and be willing to adapt at any moment.I hope that I encourage people to always give grace to others and show love when no one else is looking.
I am very appreciative of the people who give me my flowers now and share those things they believe about me that I may not see or need to be reminded of. I am a big-picture thinker who is known for bringing hidden gems and the underdogs to the forefront and being willing to support when no one else is.
I think the people will reminisce on how creative I was, how I worked hard to pass the mic to others and was willing to build from the ground up. I hope they remember those one one-on-one conversations I have with artists on showing up as their authentic selves.
I hope they remember the light I brought to every event or showcase I came with and the connections I helped them make. Those connections could be a person who gave them an opportunity or me pointing out a message I received from their art.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2017 I made a plan that I would start a brand that involved writing/blogging about music, films, books, and art. I wanted to focus on showcasing Indies because I realized how much talent was there. At that point it was just a written plan. Months later in Oct 2017 I went to an event by the S.A.G.E. Collective called “Creators of Color” and I was so inspired by the live music, the art, and the vendors. That was the catalyst that took my idea from paper to execution. There I met my business partner Terrance who was just getting into videography and photography.
In December 2017 we hit the ground running with creating content. I wanted to showcase & support talent by educating artists on marketing and branding. I also wanted to share the stories of artists. I launched in January 2018. I started blogging & going out to events and sharing what was going on on my Instagram account. I would attend events by Candice of BINACT(But I’m Not a Critic Though) At that time I didn’t feel like it was a brand it was just me letting people know what was going on and I started helping out at events behind the scenes. Before I knew it it blossomed and I had people recognizing my presence whether it was clapping & dancing when no one else would at an event, or sharing big moments on my Instagram account.
Every space I went into I poured into others by sharing my connections and I became a primary referral source of over 100 creatives. Artists started to refer to me as a tastemaker or “the plug” because I would help them get booked for shows and opportunities to share their art. People trusted my word heavily because they knew I did good work & really care about quality.
By 2019 I had my first music event. I have always been huge on diversity and inclusion showcasing artists that I felt didn’t get enough shine. I realized that at every Hip Hop show I went to there were maybe 1 or 2 women on a lineup of 10 women(should be men). I also noticed that men controlled the representation of the types of female artists we would experience. They were either oversexualized or had to mimic men with gangsta rap. I have no problem with either type of artist and I appreciate both, but I was tired of all the women in between and outside of those being left out.
I had been planning a movement to start speaking up and showcasing the diversity of Women in Hop Hop under a mantra or brand called “We Can All Eat”. In April 27,2019 I put together a lineup of diverse women who are in their own lanes of music. It was a total of 11 women , 9 being featured and 2 poets who came for the cypher. I also had great vendors and a female DJ and co-host. To this day that was one of my best works. No one believed it was my first music event because it was a great experience with up to 60 people in attendance. Relationships were made & it is an event people still talk about to this day.
One of the artists, Milah, found her footing after a 5 year hiatus and she has been booked and busy ever since. She was burned out by the industry always telling her she wasn’t enough and I told her to come to my show as she is and she killed it. I am also proud that some of the other women were able to make collaborations or deepen their friendships. This is one of my greatest works and I wish to relive this experience and come up with various sequels.
Since then I have supported other event coordinators and coordinated several events highlighting talent that is often overlooked. I have also been active in supporting artists in their marketing, branding, and creative strategies. I am always encouraging artists to think outside the box and show up as their authentic selves.
I will say after the pandemic I started taking breaks often from this line of business. I have to be honest and say that I always felt more like a non-profit than a business because I gave away a lot of free work in the name of love & respect that other artists were building at the ground up like me. I am the epitome of building community and because of that I overgave and experienced a lot of burnout.
At this point in life I am going with the flow and taking as much rest as need to. I have tons of ideas and many visions, but often feel like I don’t have the time or energy to flesh them out. I started realizing how I tried to ignore my health challenges in this industry by showing up being everywhere and being there for everyone. I live with disabilities that are invisible illnesses so there are times I have pushed myself extremely hard to be present for the music and arts scene. These days I am taking it slow and listening to my body. I am also a mother of 3 so I had to start reminding myself that I have to take adequate breaks and make sacrifices to focus on myself.
When I am not coordinating events I am working as event staff at other curators events. I am often at Guest check-in as we call “working the door” at events hosted by The Vibration(It should be Viibration ) and I would like to acknowledge her name is Tam The Viibe as the curator behind it) I would like to also emphasize that I help refer talent & help warm up the crowd by dancing & encouraging poets to do our open mic. You can also catch me doing live interviews, and consulting artists and creatives on event coordination, marketing, and branding.
I am working toward creating courses, hosting workshops, and speaking engagements because teaching is a passion of mine.I want to have workshops focused on marketing, branding, creative direction, self-care, and spirituality for artists and creatives. Sometimes I want to disappear from the hustle and bustle of creating content for social media. I also am working toward writing books. I love to write, but often don’t feel like I have the energy and time needed to truly focus on it as much as I would like. I have a Medium blog called Vibing With Cre,I have the VIbing With Cre Podcast, and I always have social media content from time to time. I also have over 70 playlists with mostly independent music artists.
I have become okay with being an “inconsistent” content creator because I own the fact that I am human. A human with 3 children and invisible illnesses who is trying to do more than survive. So when you see that my work looks incomplete or that I start series and out of nowhere I am on to a new idea just know that this is a spirit-driven creative space for me, but also I may be struggling and doing the best I can. I don’t say this for pity, but to dismiss any attempts at giving me a pedestal and living up to unfair expectations. I am gonna continue doing what I can to honor me. I am still here to serve, but I am serving on my own terms.
I am still figuring out the business side of things and don’t feel like faking it until I make it so I am offering sliding scale-free pricing for Event staffing needs, Event Coordination( I would like to add that ) Media services, Coaching/Consulting, and Creative direction services. There is probably more I can list, but just know that the mission has always been about uplifting diverse voices and fighting for artist liberation supporting initiatives to set artists free.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has helped build my reputation was the combination of offline and online interactions. I got really good at making connections by simply walking up to people asking what they do , complimenting them on their art or performance, or just having genuine conversations.
It was being “in the field” that helped more than anything. People would see me out a lot and grew accustomed to seeing my face. I always brought consistent energy every time. It was word of mouth from there . You do enough good work out here and people will talk about to others.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My life has always been a story of pivoting. In 2009 while I was still in college I gave birth to my first child. I experienced a spine injury from an adverse effect of the epidural and birthing process that resulted in multiple chronic pain disorders. It was a slow onset. I was able to finish school with the same cohort I came in with and graduated in 2011.
I graduated pregnant and had another pregnancy in 2012. I attempted graduate school twice (2011-2013 for Master of Social Work) and in 2018 for School Counseling ) but kept getting too sick to finish. At that time I could not work and did not have a babysitter so I took the time to learn social media marketing skills and began my freelance journey. When you have unstable health that brings many unpredictabilities, and when you have children you have to always be prepared to go with the flow and work with whatever resources you have.
Because of this, I realize I make a good project manager so I am using all of my coping mechanisms and adaptability from learning different skills to survive to put into (I would like to say working toward ) a project management career.
