We were lucky to catch up with Crass Deneweth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Crass, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was born to draw. I started drawing at two years old. I was the kid that was doodling on homework and making little comics. I even went on to get my BFA at Eastern Michigan University. And from there I’ve mostly been working on making my own merch and taking commissions.
There isn’t an exact “aha” moment for me when it came to pursuing art. Drawing is like breathing for me, I need to do it. It goes beyond a hobby and a profession. Art is the only language I speak fluently.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Crass, I refer to myself as the Swiss army artist. I do a little of everything! My main focus is on digital art, stickers and shirts. But I’m hoping to expand into all kinds of other custom merchandise. I realized I wanted to get into merchandising when I got some stickers made for an art show. It was cool that people could buy little bite sized pieces of my art.
The thing I take pride in the most is my speed. It is very unusual for any art of mine to take more than an hour to create. Clients who commission me can expect it to be done same day.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in life is to fully live off of my art and create without limits. I want to make anything and everything! If it exists, I’d love to find a way to make art out of it. I’ve even used gum wrapper foil to make art. One medium is simply not enough. I want to spend my life learning how to create with any medium. The more I master, the more I can give back to people. It’s the best feeling when a client sees their designs and ideas brought to life.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The best part about being a creative is being able to bring ideas to life. Art is like alchemy, making something beautiful and tangible out of a thought. I love being able to have the ability to untangle emotions and thoughts into something that resonates with people. Words aren’t my strength. It’d difficult for me to articulate what I’m thinking or feeling. My art is the only way I know how to give myself a voice.
