Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Craig Adams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Craig, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a risk is an everyday occurrence in the life of an artist. One of the biggest risks I have ever taken was making the move from NY to LA. I was in a band for a few years back east and started to feel like the wheels weren’t spinning as fast as I needed them to. I felt like there had to be more out there for me. I felt there was someplace else I should be to really capitalize on my art and my craft, so I woke up one morning and felt I had to make the move. I gave everyone I cared about and all my obligations about 2 weeks’ notice and before I could even talk myself out of it I was on the road out to Los Angeles, leaving behind everything and everyone I ever knew and loved for a brand new city that I knew no one or nothing about, All along, no matter how hard it was adjusting to a new scene and basically starting all over, I never once doubted it was the right decision. Here I am now almost a decade later, and I have had experiences I would have never imagined, been able to meet, collaborate, and learn from artists that I respect and admire…Some throughout my whole life. I think you learn the most about yourself that you possibly can when you just go ahead and take that chance..
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Music has always been the center of my universe since I could remember, Since the day I was born there was always music around. No one else in my family had any particular musical skill or talent, none of my relatives could even hold an instrument correctly, but there was always music playing, whether my mom was cleaning the house or we had family functions there was always good tunes playing in the air. Then I remember clear as day being about 4 or 5 years old and going to a cousins wedding with my family, they had a live band there and I was never the same.
I took some lessons after that and started writing songs as early as about 10 years old. I was awkward kid and certainly not the most popular in my school so most days when the other kids were out playing in the neighborhood, I was in my parent’s basement creating songs. Finally, when I was about 19 years old, I worked in a clothing store and had a boss who was a standup comedian and he had found out that I played music and asked me if I wanted to be the opening act for a weekly comedy show he put on at a local dive bar. and I haven’t stopped since.
I am very proud of my convictions and my passion for my craft, and I am very proud of the music that I create. Its authentically me and honest and if you really listen you can get a bit of a glimpse of what makes me tick.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The biggest thing I think society can do to best support artists and creatives is to understand that there needs to be a considerable value to our work. In the music industry in particular, it has been a long time since there was actual legitimate value placed on one’s creative output. You used to have to go out to a store and pay for a record, or a cd, but since the rise of the internet that value has diminished greatly. Just because something is so easily accessible doesn’t mean it is worthless. We as creatives are still spending a lot of money, and heart and soul on our product and there needs to be a standard set across the board. How do you do that? Well, if I knew the answer to that I would be a very successful artist,
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal and mission of my creative journey is a simple one that I know a lot of other creatives share. To live out my life with my true purpose in this world which is to create music that becomes part of the ether we live in and present itself in whatever form it takes from person to person, and to make a living at it as well, because at the end of the day, this is my identity, this is my calling, and I cannot see myself doing anything else to survive and thrive in this world.
