We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Crack Jesus a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Crack , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think success takes self-discipline, consistency & strategy. I don’t believe you can be consistent without discipline & you can’t be selective on what you discipline yourself on because that makes you not fully in control. I also feel if you don’t have a strategy on how to continue being successful you lose your grasp on it. I watch a lot of interviews with people I feel are successful in the field that I’m looking to get into. The one thing they all have in common is consistency, they never let up on what they was aiming towards. Their plan A stayed their plan A and stuck with it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I love being creative. Any idea that comes to mind that I believe I can bring to life I go for it. Which would normally involve me creating a certain type of song or visual to go with the song. Also even if it’s just a piece of clothing or an outfit to make. Take my brand for example. NFY. To some it’s just a derogatory phrase which it does derive from so I’m not mad at that, but for me it was a mood off the fact that not everyone is going to like what I’m doing, what im saying or even as much as what I’m wearing. So in my head I’m just like well ok “N**ga F*** You”. I was always told not to care what other people think so even though im not telling them that, that’s just how I feel. Now when I advertise it to different groups of people I use the same acronym but another name “Not For You”. Which basically goes with the first meaning because if you don’t like what I’m saying, doing, wearing etc. then it’s just ‘Not For You’. So the brand can sit well with people who especially don’t use the alternative phrase and also for kids because I do have kids clothes as well. I think the meaning behind my brand is what sets me apart from most brands. I know some people that make clothing brands for a quick buck and this isn’t that. I feel NFY allows you to express yourself and how you don’t care what others think and I’m super big on that. I’m most proud of the fact that someone always approaches me or anybody that is wearing the brand and gives positive feedback especially about the meaning behind it, they always get a good laugh out of it. I want people to know that when they wear NFY they are showing the world it doesn’t matter what you think because they will be themselves regardless.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I always ask for feedback anytime I have a new client or a potential client. I like to keep them relevant in my life because I’m genuinely interested in the reason you chose to engage with what you saw in my brand. More than likely we have things in commons whether it’s what we like to wear or the specific reason you chose to wear this brand. If a client purchases something I look to see if they also have a business or if they are also a creative, so I can return the favor. I like to form a connection because I love to support who supports me.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience with my humor because I never met a person who doesn’t like to laugh. If I want you to know about upcoming clothes that I’m dropping, shows where I’m performing or any music that’s coming out I make an advertisement. Most brands that we buy whether it’s soap, hair products, food, furniture etc. there’s a commercial for it. I gather a couple friends and tell them what I’m advertising and I give them all scripts just like a normal commercial. We film it on an iPhone, nothing extraordinary and I edit the video myself in an app and then boom, it’s ready! I take the most climactic part of the video sort of like a movie preview and I post it on every single social media account that I have and wait for reactions or comments for the whole video. When suspense builds up I release the whole video. The engagement is either going to come with a purchase or even just a share because the content did what it was suppose to do which is get people to interact. Some people don’t like to be the face of the brand so if that’s you , you can always have a team for footwork or to advertise something like a brand ambassador. I thinks that’s great too because they can reach the people you don’t know and get a whole new fanbase.
