Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Coy Flynn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Coy, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
My school and training experience is something I reflect on a lot. I attended graduate school at Michigan State University where I received my M.S. in Kinesiology. It’s funny to me sometimes because I didn’t even believe I wanted to attend grad school until my final semester of undergrad. Although I decided I wanted to take on another investment in myself. Turned out to be totally worth it. Not only because of the great education I received in the classroom, but it opened up many more opportunities for me. More experiences that were opened up to me, more mistakes I was able to make and grow from, and more incredible coaches I had to learn from. I tried to find and take every experience I could. Wanting to learn all that was to learn about training. In graduate school you have all sorts of free time. That taught me how to fill up my time productively and only with things I was passionate about. Which was, wanting to learn every lesson I could about the industry and training. I will be the first to admit I will always have more to learn, but that is what I love about this industry. You have to always be striving to grow and learn. There was a period of time while at Michigan State where I was working as a Graduate Assistant teaching Weight Training I and II to MSU students, working in the basketball weight room with the men’s and women’s teams as an intern, teaching group exercise classes on the side for some extra pocket money, taking two to three graduate courses depending on the semester, all while trying to maintain somewhat of a normal social life. Of course I learned a lot in the classroom, but what really prepared me for where I am at now were all the amazing experiences I learned from and tremendous friends I made along the way.
Coy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who may not have read about me before my name is Coy Flynn and I am a Sport Performance Specialist. I was born and raised in Indiana. In 2020 I moved to Atlanta and now work as the Director of Sport Performance for Pinnacle Performance. I started off as an athlete myself and that’s how I got into the industry. I was always very curious about how I could train and find ways to make myself a better athlete. Now I take that same curiosity and passion into helping all the athletes I train reach their potential. Every day comes with a new challenge. There is never a day where you are just Coach. You also have to be the DJ. Some days you have to be the repair man. Other days you just have to be a really good friend. But, everyday you gotta bring the energy. Whether it is a good day for you or not. No athlete ever just gets a coach, but they get a support system and family. I’m most proud of the kids I train and families I am fortunate to work with.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training and knowledge, to me if you don’t have a love for what you are doing, you can’t succeed in this field. If you don’t bring love and passion to what you are doing every day, then how will those around be able to do the same?
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think building a reputation comes from the quality of work and experience you provide in this market. If you do great things day in and day out then great things and people will find you.
