We recently connected with Coven and have shared our conversation below.
Coven, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I would have started my creative career much sooner. I started pursuing film when I was 21, but I wrote my first screenplay when I was 18. My passion for the arts changed as I got older, so I spent my younger years pursuing acting and only began producing and directing because I’d written stories that I knew I wanted to act in and I didn’t know anyone who would produce or direct for me. I’m glad I didn’t though because the more I did it, the more I realized these jobs complimented my natural skills.
So when I say I wish I would have started sooner, I mean I wish I would have started connecting with the film community as a director and producer. I wish I had been more involved with the technical aspects of camera and audio sooner, just having a more well-rounded idea of what it takes to make a film and finding my groove within that creative process.

Coven, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! My name is Coven, I got into this industry as an actor who wanted to play interesting, well-rounded characters, and when the roles weren’t coming my way… I wrote them! That started my path to being a producer and director with HoneyShock Pictures. We create narrative and commercial projects and continue to collaborate with creatives and businesses who share that same love for the art of film and see the value in creative storytelling.
I’m most proud of the community we have found within the industry and how many people are genuinely good to work with. I feel blessed to say there is no such thing as a bad day on a HoneyShock set. No matter how I feel before a shoot, I know that once we’re all on set, working to create something beautiful, there’s going to be good energy because we’ve surrounded ourselves with kind-hearted, knowledgeable creatives.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing how people react to your work! I’ve seen people laugh at my comedies and be disturbed by my psychological thrillers! It’s an interesting thing, to be able to move someone to an emotion. I also just love to hear people’s theories when it comes to my less concrete projects, I find it insightful when someone asks me if one of my projects is a metaphor for something I hadn’t even thought about throughout the entire project, from writing to the final edit!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Patience is a lesson I have to learn and re-learn every day. I have a lot of ambition and sometimes it’s hard to wait for everything to come to fruition. But every day I try to extend myself some grace, to be patient with myself and the world around me! I find that it helps to look back at my situation a year ago, where was I physically, mentally, and creatively? Would that version of me feel motivated or even proud of the version she sees now? I like to think so, yeah.
