Alright, Courtnie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As the owner of a luxury handmade goods business, my journey of learning began with a retired woodworker at a makerspace who generously shared his expertise and showed me how to use certain tools. This hands-on experience provided me with a solid foundation in woodworking techniques and craftsmanship. When it came to learning about resin, however, I took a more experimental approach. I conducted numerous trials and errors, learning from my mistakes and refining my techniques along the way. Additionally, I dedicated a significant amount of time to researching various aspects of resin work, including material properties, safety precautions, and advanced techniques. Additionally, the cost of materials and resources was another hurdle. Experimenting with resin can be expensive, and it took careful planning and budgeting to ensure I had the necessary supplies to continue learning and refining my skills. Overall, my learning journey involved a combination of hands-on experience, extensive research, trial and error, and the willingness to seek knowledge from various sources. While there were obstacles along the way, the satisfaction of acquiring new skills and creating luxury handmade goods made it all worthwhile.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view, there are several ways society can best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem. Society should recognize and appreciate the importance of art in our lives. This includes fostering a culture that values artistic expression and understands its significance in shaping our society and individual experiences. Nurturing creativity from a young age and providing opportunities for artistic exploration, we can inspire and support future generations of artists and creatives. This involves promoting diversity in exhibitions, performances, and other creative platforms, as well as addressing systemic barriers that hinder marginalized artists from accessing resources and opportunities. Individuals can contribute by purchasing art directly from artists and supporting crowdfunding campaigns. Encourage collaborations between artists, creatives, and other industries can foster innovation and mutual growth. Networking events, workshops, and platforms that facilitate connections can help artists expand their reach, find new opportunities, and learn from one another. Society should support and enforce copyright laws, as well as advocate for fair compensation for artists when their work is used or reproduced.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
The speculative nature of NFTs raises questions about the long-term value and sustainability of the market. It’s concerning to witness some artists being overshadowed by the hype around NFTs, as it places undue pressure on creators to conform to market trends rather than focusing on artistic expression and creativity. Additionally, the volatility and unpredictability of the NFT market can create an environment where the value of an artist’s work becomes disconnected from its actual artistic merit.
There are also groups that sell the nfts amongst themselves at high prices until someone comes along who isn’t in the group and buys it at a high price because they see the price history and think it’s worth something, but it’s not; resulting in the group making a profit.
Furthermore, the potential for plagiarism and copyright infringement is a pressing concern. Since NFTs can be created from any digital content, it becomes easier for someone to claim ownership of another artist’s work without consent or proper attribution. This can undermine the integrity and originality of the art world, where artists’ rights and intellectual property should be respected.
