We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney Winters a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Courtney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
We didn’t start our company with the goal of being the biggest and most successful home inspection company in town. At the time, we were both working full-time, and had a then almost two-year-old that we weren’t spending as much time with as we wanted. We’re not planning on having any more children, and it really hit us one day that we’re never going to get this time back. Our main goal with moving to working for ourselves, was to have the flexibility and control over our own schedule to prioritize him. That is the main part of we want our legacy to be, that we did what we needed to, even when it was harder and scarier, to be able to make our time with our family our top priority. That being said, we also pride ourselves on our communication with our clients, and the service that we deliver. We will do whatever we can to provide a great experience in a timely fashion, where everyone is kept in the loop about what’s going to be happening.

Courtney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a home inspection company that specializes in providing residential inspections to potential home buyers during their purchasing process, and giving them a thorough report that they can use to make an informed decision about the home. One thing that sets us apart from other home inspection companies is our professional backgrounds in property management and maintenance. We have seen, handled, and mitigated pretty much anything you can imagine including fires, major pest infestations, FBI raids, water main breaks, and more. We’re experienced in how to communicate effectively and calmly what next steps should be taken in high-stress situations, and also have trusted vendors to recommend that we have worked with personally. As far as our offerings, we offer a range of supplementary inspections such as termite and radon, and if a client is interested in something we don’t currently offer then we will research, schedule, and coordinate with a vendor that does so that the client isn’t having to work with multiple companies. As far as our brand, we are just really proud to be equal partners and co-owners together, and get to build this company for our family!

How did you build your audience on social media?
The best advice I’ve received for growing your social media following is to not overthink it. I am a chronic overthinker and really struggle with second-guessing every picture, reel, caption, etc. Our most successful post though was a couple of seconds video of a breaker panel sparking, which we just thought was interesting, but as of right now has almost 450 thousand views. Nobody is thinking as deeply about what you post as you are, because they’re too busy thinking deeply about their own posts! It’s better to get something out there, even if you’re not 100% happy with it, than to never post anything at all.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Attending industry-specific networking events. People are more likely to work with someone that they know, and especially with an industry like home inspections people really need to feel a sense of trust in you. Getting out there and spending our time building relationships with other home inspectors, real estate agents, and others in the real estate industry has been really beneficial. It also helps to have other people in your network that you can reach out to when you encounter something you maybe haven’t seen before, or refer out to if needed.
