We recently connected with Courtney Wilson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think to be successful you have to be willing to handle rejection & setbacks. There is no easy road to building a business. If you are truly willing to work hard & go the extra mile then you will steadily build a strong & successful business. Something I do when I need encouragement to stay the course is to listen to a motivational podcast or read a book. I highly recommend the book- Grit by Angela Duckworth. Grit is absolutely necessary to reach your business goals.
Courtney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My friends would often ask me how I stayed so organized? I realized that I had a skill that I enjoyed- making a space functional, styled & smart. Smart meaning it saves you time! When I learned that professional organizing was an actual profession I decided to jump in & start my own business.
First, I organized for my family & friends so that I could test my skills. I got hooked immediately from watching my early “tester clients” go from feeling stressed about a space to feeling peace & calm. Next, I got all the details of my business in order and began marketing my services. I took on a variety of projects so that I was challenged to learn how to solve multiple problem areas. One of those projects was organizing a walk-in commercial freezer for a small business. I worked in a freezer that was -10 degrees Fahrenheit!
It took a leap of faith to start this business but I have met so many amazing clients & people in this industry. Of course, there have been a lot of challenges but the wins have kept me going. I absolutely believe that paying attention to the details of our lives like a drawer or a shelf will streamline our daily living & save us valuable time.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy has been doing an excellent job so that my clients refer my business to their friends & family. Listening to my clients is an important aspect of organizing. When I fully understand their goals I am able to create a custom solution that they not only enjoy using but is also easy for them to maintain.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This past year I broke my right arm playing pickleball. I’m right-handed so this was a big challenge. Organizing is a physical job so I had to figure out how to do more tasks with my left arm. Thankfully, I have a great assistant that stepped in to help with the physical aspects of our projects so that I could make sure I healed as quickly as possible. Teamwork & determination!
