We recently connected with Courtney Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
.When did I know? Mmmm that is a great question. I want to give you a little backstory before I answer the question. I have six siblings, two sisters and 4 brothers. My three brothers and I are closer in age, so we did practically everything together, even dressed similarly. I attended private school when I was in elementary school, in which I had to wear a uniform, every part of the uniform had to be the exact same down to the shoes. I disliked the shoes so much, I can still remember the annoying sound they made when I would walk from the buckle hitting the top of my foot. I also disliked the uniform because everyone looked like one person, that made me anti uniform. Around the age of fourteen I had gained my own sense of style. At that point I just wanted to be my own person and not look like my siblings or anyone else. This is why I enjoyed going back to school shopping for clothes with my mother. My mother loved to watch me put outfits together and I know she knew how much I loved it too.High school was my very own fashion show, I had a ball experimenting with my style, I was finding myself and my voice through my clothes. It is so amazing and surprising to me that for years I had all these beautiful memories and connections to fashion and still had no idea that February 2022 I was going to put all of the pieces together to pursue my passion.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
February 2022 I decided to become a fashion stylist. These past few years have been tough , everyone was affected by COVID-19. From losing loved ones to losing jobs the world needed a fresh start and I did as well . Growing up I was always told “ God works in mysterious ways” or “ Things happen for a reason “ Now I understand these phrases because during the pandemic I was someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and was laid off. So much was going on and everyone was in a panic state of mind. While the world was spiraling we still found ways to enjoy ourselves by using platforms like TikTok. TikTok brought happiness and creativity into people’s households during this horrible time. It’s a social media platform where you can learn any and everything and still entertain yourself . One day I started posting fashion inspiration content.Within 2 months of being consistent I noticed the engagement on my account and couldn’t believe how there were so many people loving my content. The great feedback I received motivated me to provide styling services. Now I provide 3 virtual styling services which are styling from your personal closet, styling a new look, and creating a new wardrobe. I also provide photo shoot services where I become your stylist and creative Director. I create your background scene and give you poses you can do and I have a professional photographer. I love to get to know my clients to understand their style ,see if they have any do’s or don’ts or if they even have an idea of what they would like to be styled in. This is a process I like to use to help me help my clients so I can provide the best services. My job is to make you feel comfortable and be the best version of yourself. Fashion is a way you describe yourself, it’s a mood ,it’s art ,it’s poetry. How do you feel when you get all dressed up and you know you look good ? You feel like you can conquer the world and when you look good you feel good and that is a fact. It was a time when I started to gained a lot of weight and I didn’t feel like myself, I didn’t really want to be around people the weight made me depressed. I never spoke about it because I didn’t realize that I was depressed and I was avoiding going out. What made me get out of my funk was fashion, getting dolled up putting look’s together getting my hair ,nails and makeup done helped me build my confidence back up. Sometimes you just need reassurance from yourself that you look good. This is why I love what I do and I am very passionate about my brand. My brand name speaks for itself Demeanor by Court Rene’e your demeanor is the way you describe yourself. I want to take my brand to the next level. I want to continue styling people but I also want to start my own clothing line Demeanor by court renee is for everyone of all body types ,all race and all ages. Demeanor by court renee is a movement, we are Demeanor By Court Renee.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish that I would have taken more time using resources to research and process better business plans in the earlier stages of my creative journey. My decision process is very interesting, it’s never a dull moment in my head. I’m always thinking of a million things at once and constantly changing my mind. When I research things pertaining to my business, I noticed that I would love the idea of something but not weigh the pros and cons. I am very aware that in the beginning stages of any business you’re learning and growing at the same time so mistakes are going to be made. However, it is always great to understand and learn from it all. My future is extremely full with executed research and business plans. Planning accordingly saves time, money and stress.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal is to be happy, fashion is my happiness and what brought me on this creative journey. My mother always provided a safe space for my siblings and I too have dreams and too turn those dreams into goals. She’ll say “ I want all my kids to be happy, find something that makes you happy, find a career that you love that you’re passionate about, life isn’t about money”. It’s so crazy how this world we live in tries to take that passion from us because it may not be the career that makes you a lot of money. I can’t thank my mother enough for instilling this in my head because there were many moments when I felt like I didn’t have purpose. Now I found my calling, knowing that I can help people in the ways that I do is the beauty in itself.
