We were lucky to catch up with Courtney Roberts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I was in my second semester of clinical to become a Family Nurse Practitioner and I decided that I wanted to go into business for myself doing IV hydration and wellness services, but I still had 2.5 semesters before I would finish my degree. I began to take IV hydration, botox, and dermal filler classes. At this time I was still working as an registered nurse at the time completeing COVID contracts and saving money. I wanted to wait until I was completely finished my degree, but in August 2021 I found an amazing location in Towson,Md and I knew it was meant to be. I knew it was go time; now or never! I signed my lease before I had completed my degree, but I was that focused and determined to reach my goal of becoming a nurse practitioner and running my own medical spa. I graduated with my FNP degree in November 2021 and opened my own Medspa in January 2022.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As the owner and operator of Cure Medspa & Wellness, I have made it my soul’s purpose to help to help my clients build their confidence and flourish by providing services that help them improve their self esteem and overall wellness. I am a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner owner of Cure Medspa & Wellness located in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area. I have been a Registered Nurse for 5 years, specializing in cardiac, renal, and wound care. She has also traveled all over Maryland as a crisis and dialysis nurse. Prior to becoming a nurse, I was a phlebotomist and dialysis technician. I have spent the last year and a half diving deep into the world of aesthetics. So experience and training is important to me.
Cure as a brand is dedicated to empowering our clients to be the best versions of themselves, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Through services such as botox, dermal fillers, PDO threads, IV hydration, body contouring, facials, weight loss; we want our clients to be well educated about options that they have to reach their body goals so they can make informed decisions.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I believe besides training and knowledge, to be successful in nursing aesthetics you have to understand human connection. Your clients is most likely coming to you to alter or enchance something that they have been insecure about for a long time. You have to create an interpersonal connection with your client and show that you care about them and their results, while also educating them about the risk versus rewards. No one wants to go to a practitioner that only tells them the good things. Be real in your consultation process and be honest. I believe this establishes a good trusting relationship with your clients.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I believe the most effective strategy in growing my clientele had been word of mouth and referrals. Treating my clients well and with respect has granted me any client referrals. Showing my guests that they are appreciated and always presenting them with options to reach their goals. I present my clients with the facts about treatments and they respect me for my honesty.
