Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Courtney Ramsey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Courtney, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?

What a great question. Women and birthing persons, especially those of color, aren’t afforded the time, space or opportunity to cherish and celebrate themselves. We’re so busy being there for everyone and everything else but ourselves. My mission is to help women feel appreciated, cherished and beautifully seen in their best light. To have a positive experience that yields not only beautiful images, but also encourages and empowers women to step forward and see themselves for the amazing person they are.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Yes! Hello, my name is Courtney Ramsey. I’m a women’s portrait photographer based in the DMV, specializing in luxury Maternity, Motherhood and Women’s portraits.  My team creates a stress-free, safe space to relax, and be loved on, while creating fly-ass imagery and generational heirlooms.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

Life is long and beautiful. It’s exciting, exhausting, sexy, dangerous, ever changing, unforgiving, empowering, not guaranteed, and rewarding.

And because of this, some days I’m driven by my mission for women, specifically black women to celebrate and acknowledge themselves. To have beautiful images of this time in their life. To have beautiful albums and art to pass on to their children and their children’s children. And more importantly to have beautiful images of themselves FOR themselves.

Imagery is among the oldest and most valued forms of storytelling, representation, and art. We deserve to see ourselves. We deserve to tell our own story.

Some of my most treasured heirlooms are family pictures and albums going back four generations. My nana’s wedding picture with my great-grandfather officiating her wedding, my mom’s childhood pictures. Pictures of my dad in grade school and my grandparents on their tobacco farm in North Carolina. My great-grandparents in their Sunday best. This is important. It represents where I’ve been and where I’m going.

Other days I’ve been driven by nothing but passion to deliver a positive and loving experience that ends with fly-ass images and a life-long connection. My team and I are rooting for, celebrating, empowering and encouraging every being who steps into my studio. My clients never leave the way they arrive. They leave feeling sexy, empowered and just lighter! And I’m here for it!

Everyday I’m driven by the desire for women to be present in their living legacy.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Surprisingly enough, the best source of new clients has been word of mouth. I thought it would be social media, but it’s not been the case. Social media provides reference and validation of my work, but the relationships I’ve built with my clients are invaluable.
