We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney North a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I have worked on in my company was working with children and allowing them to design their very own shirt! It was such a fun experience to work with these children, allowing them to express their creativity and spread the message they want to spread.
I worked with Noah who is Autistic who designed two shirts, the best thing about these shirts is that they contain words from Noah himself, who is Autistic, printed on the Tees in his own handwriting.
The two statements by Noah are:
“I am funny, I am amazing, I am curious, and I am cool.”
“I am not afraid to be myself because I know I am awesome.”
We were able to raise awareness for Autism and donate to Autism Council of Utah. And everyone got to know him a bit better because of this.
I also worked with Cal who has Dwarfism, Cal designed a shirt that contained words from Calvin himself, printed on the Tees in his own handwriting. The statement he came up with is “Be Powerful. Stay Curious.” The best thing about the shirts is that they have ALL of Calvin’s favorite things mixed into one drawing. A monster with a lightsaber (because he loves star wars), a lightning bolt (because he loves Harry Potter), and a boxing glove (because he loves boxing).
We were able to raise awareness for Dwarfism and I got to know him and his sweet family better and they are really rad!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Courtney North, I own a company with my son Sawyer called Don’t Fit In,
We sell clothing and wrote a children’s book to spread the message of self love! Our mission is to inspire others to continually grow and embrace their true authentic self – using our tagline “Don’t Sit Still. Don’t Fit In”
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to help build confidence in every child and help them learn to love themselves. It’s what keeps me going and drives me to do more and more.
We recently launched our Children’s Activity Guides, this 30-Day Children’s Activity Guide will help your child learn many ways to love themselves, take care of themselves, accept their differences and create a life they love.
It will provide your child important tools needed in their future such as, journaling, mediation, mindfulness and connecting with who they truly are.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think that community is so important for small businesses and rallying around those that want to do more for the community is what will keep them going. There are so many ways to help support small businesses, here are some ways to start.
Like & Share on Social Media
Spread the Word
Include them in Local Events (connection)
Support Local
Shop small businesses for gift giving
Donate help/time
Share ideas/suggestions
There are many more ways to help!
