We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney McCullagh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I take on a new client in my social media agency work, I am always eager to ensure that I am able to best share their story properly. As a journalist with my degree in Strategic Communication from the University of North Texas, I seek to gather all of the information to tell my client’s history and passion behind their business.
This is why I take care to implement my own story into my page as well as the stories of the brands I represent on theirs. An example of this is sharing the rich history of the Ethiopian origins for one of my clients, @thequeenofshebarestaurant’s food, or the unique Taiwanese influence behind another one of my clients @mknoodleco’s. To me, t’s extremely important that I accurately portray the rich culture and tradition each concept was to begin the company and continues to be for their target audience. This is what sets all of our businesses apart in the best way and this is why I went into business: to help share their story to help them succeed.
Whatever your story is, and how it got you to where you are now, make sure to weave it into your content in one form or another. It will not only inform your audience of where you’re coming from, but also tell them why they should care about where you’re going.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We work with conscious companies that are working to create a better, more sustainable future. We wish to accentuate what the brands we partner with are already doing in their space with content that inspires and attracts like-minded individuals to join their mission.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building a social media personality is all about leaning into your authentic self. I always tell all of my clients that the more they can identify what makes them/their brand unique, the more they’re going to align with their ideal customer.
As I was building my social media presence, I took my own advice by showcasing the quirks that made me stand out, such as my fun, colorful hair and style, bubbly personality, and education in journalism.
For anyone just starting off, I’d say put your best, most true version of yourself forward and continue to stay strong in who you are and not bend to anyone else’s version of you, or try to follow any trends, and you will be sure to make an impact on social media.
Specifically, show off pictures of you, you doing the work you do, behind the scenes, you and your team and/or family/friends. These types of content really resonate with audiences as it enacts the “human element”. What everyone honestly wants to do on social media is make lasting connections. So when you share your real-life pictures and videos, they stay with your audience longer than a sales pitch.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The customer is not always right. It’s a hard one to relearn but especially in the world of social media, there are some tactics that simply do not work.
I had a previous client that was insistent on being very “hands-on”, despite hiring me and my team to take the reigns. By being too involved and trying to micromanage every detail, they inevitably made the success of their social media presence stagnant and never really let us do the successful tactics that we have implemented with other clients in the past.
The new lesson learned there is being able to “vet” our clients before hand and be clear that they are hiring us as the “Social Media Experts” and let us respectfully do our jobs to help their brand grow on social media.
