We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney Marsell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I have to start by saying my parents always supported me, no matter what I wanted to do in life they believed in me, always.
My parents bought me my first camera when I was young, it was a Canon PowerShot and oh man did I love it! I took that thing everywhere and my dad, having an eye for photography himself helped me learn and spark my interest in photography even more.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a fun, outgoing and creative photographer who loves to capture the beauty of the world around me. I specialize in fashion photography, content creation and working with models and brands. I’m always looking for new and innovative ways to tell stories through my images.
I’m passionate about using my photography to empower people and make them feel confident. I believe that everyone has a unique beauty that deserves to be celebrated. I want my images to inspire people to embrace their own individuality.
I’m also a strong believer in collaboration. I love working with other creatives to bring my vision to life. I’m always open to new ideas and I’m always looking for ways to push myself creatively.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a photographer one of the most rewarding aspects is seeing the photos you have taken of a client being used on their social media. Whether it be for their profile photo or just posting your work with the proper credit on their feed, it is such a good feeling that your ckient enjoys you work enough to put it out there for their followers to see.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There has been several times where I have decided to pivot but this biggest would be when my boyfriend and I made the move to Los Angeles.
In Oregon I was focused on family photography and senior portraits. I started that again in LA and realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do with my craft.
I started diving into the fashion, model and creative side of the photography world by joining various Facebook groups, reaching out to local models and brands. I finally was connected with a few asiring models and we went to work.
