Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Courtney Kittrell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Courtney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission of my brand Unapologetically Favored is built on inspiring, empowering, and encouraging others to find their passion and purpose in life and walk in it. Walk in it with courage, confidence, and humility.
Many people struggle with who they are and lack the confidence to embrace and be their whole, true authentic selves. I remember struggling with my identity and not having anyone I could talk to who could make me look at situations in my life a little differently, who could encourage me to set boundaries, and who taught me how to focus on my happiness before I tried to make someone else happy. I was in a world, as a young adult, with no guidance, making up what I thought I was right or what was the adult thing to do.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2018, I published my first memoir, Unapologetically Favored; A Woman. A Leader. A Testimony. Even while being a Master Chief in the United States Navy, I am no stranger to prejudice, intolerance, and a lack of self-belief, but it is through my personal and career struggles that I found fulfillment, growth, and success.
Since the release of my first book, I have published two motivational books: Wake Up. Turn Up. Bless Up. and Never Be Afraid to Eat Alone, I launched a motivational apparel line, I host my own motivational radio show, Unapologetically Favored with Courtney A. Kittrell, on iHeart Radio with WRDB Media, and I do a lot of speaking engagements.
In my written works, podcasts, and motivational speaking, I offer motivational guidance that hinges on promoting radical self-belief, walking in one’s purpose, and never apologizing for being who you are. Believing in yourself and changing your negative to positive one day at a time.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Of course, social media has taken the world by storm. My business is on social media like most. I can say that it is nowhere near millions of followers, but the followers I do have are very loyal. When constructing your business, it is highly important that you understand and know the audience you want to serve. Everything isn’t for everybody. If you cannot target your audience in a way in which they can connect, it will be hard to promote or even gain support.
My target audience is around 16 years of age and older. When I post on social media, it empowering, encouraging, and motivational. I usually receive responses from my followers that say, “I needed to hear that” or “Thank you for this”. To me, that makes what I do successful. I don’t look for the NUMBER of followers. I find my success in the responses and who I can impact through my words.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation has been built on me being genuinely who I am. People see all the glitz, glitter, and fame on social media, but that doesn’t relate to the everyday working person. They want to see people like them, who have had to struggle, who know how it feels to have a bad day, who can relate to not being perfect, and who understand how it feels to be broke. They don’t want someone who knows everything about nothing and has the perfect life. Being kind, genuine, humble, transparent, and relatable is definitely the key.
