Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Courtney King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Courtney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I had been licensed and working for other practices for about 8 years before I decided to take the leap and start my own massage practice. Once I had the name, Kingdom Wellness, I began doing research on what else I needed. Truthfully, I felt like I had no idea what I was doing, but I just decided once I get enough of a plan I’m just going to go for it. I opened my LLC and got my EIN, so now it was time to start searching for a location. Finding a location in Sarasota, FL is quite challenging, especially when you’re just starting a business; it’s so incredibly expensive and there’s so many considerations when opening a wellness practice. You have to make sure everything will pass inspection and for me, I work with a lot of patients that are there for pain management and can’t always walk far distances, etc. so I had to keep that in mind as well. Then you have to think of all your start up costs. Luckily, my husband and I had saved enough to make work. After lots of hard work and prayer, things just kept falling into place. It confirmed even more this was the right timing and exactly what I needed to do. I wouldn’t have changed a thing looking back. You have to go through challenges and failures in order to learn and grow. For anyone wanting to start their own business, I would say go for it! It’s the most rewarding and stretching thing you will ever do. Yes, things are hard and you end up working more for less money at the start, but it’s so worth it because it’s yours. You’re making an investment long term and if you don’t give yourself the option of giving up, you will reap the benefits.
Courtney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to do something in the healthcare field. The idea of serving others and helping them feel better was a passion of mine. When I discovered that massage therapy provides more benefits than just a “feel good” “fluffy relaxation,” I knew that was the way I wanted to go. My mom had always dealt with chronic back pain and if I could help her, it would be worth every penny. I have formulated my practice, Kingdom Wellness, for those seeking something more out of body work than your average massage. We specialize in a more medical type massage where we incorporate many different modalities designed specifically for each patient such as trigger point therapy, Myofascial Release, prenatal massage, cupping therapy, lymphatic draining, Microcurrent point stimulation and so much more. We pride ourselves with being able to help so many people out of pain and even help bring some with severe anxiety out of fight or flight. We also love our mamas. We provide a prenatal massage so completely different than anyone else. It seems like many therapists are either afraid to work on pregnant women or they just do a relaxation, but there’s so much more a body needs while it’s growing a baby. The aches and pains one experiences can be so debilitating, so to be able to provide serious relief is so incredibly rewarding.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think being my authentic self with my patients helped build my reputation within the wellness market. When people see that you genuinely care about them and honor them, especially their time and who they are, they want to tell people about it because it’s sadly unheard of. My patients would tell everyone not just about their incredible results but also about me and my character. I received an abundance of business just through word of mouth. Actually listening to people has such an incredible impact.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I honestly feel like I’ve had to pivot many times in my short time of business. We’ve had to move locations unexpectedly, deal with rent increases over 60%, inflation, and now I’m in probably one of the biggest business pivots. I’m eight months pregnant with my first baby, bringing on a couple more massage therapists, training them, and taking more of a back seat as a therapist, navigating the possible purchase our suite or losing it if it doesn’t make sense financially and everything that goes with that. It’s definitely a season of being on our toes, but just like everything in business you just learn as you go and roll with the punches. If you don’t take risks, you don’t grow.
