We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney Jameson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Courtney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I wanted to reach a community of peoples in order to share my knowledge, experience, & creativity. I never really wanted to be a teacher, but more of a sharer of knowledge bc to me that is how poetry & witchcraft thrive. Because of this, I created two businesses: 1. White Stag Publishing: A literary press that could reach those in a niche, maybe otherwise not seen in the poetry community, & publish their works, then share those works with the masses. And 2. Crimson Sage: An esoteric shoppe where I could share my knowledge & experience of the occult with people in my community.
Courtney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
White Stag Publishing is a small press, primarily publishing poetry, though we are moving into all genres next year. Our focus is on alchemy & the occult with intersections of science & mysticism, witchcraft & activism, spirituality & speculative writing, & the Supra natural.
Crimson Sage is a small online shoppe selling handmade ritual tools, metal & herbal alchemy, skincraft, & functional art.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think presenting & maintaining integrity to my authors, audience, & customers really built our reputation. We are constantly trying to learn new ways of interacting with people to create a safe & inclusive space, as well as products that are well thought out, researched, & made with quality ingredients or materials. I also want to provide accessibility when it comes to magic & the occult, make these things reachable for those who are otherwise intimidated or even unaware of contemporary witchcraft & occultism.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
With White Stag Publishing, we use Squarespace, which is good for the low volume of products we currently have. With Crimson Sage, we’ve been using Etsy. Because are sales & revenue is higher compared to White Stag, we like Etsy because it gives us all of the tools we need to sell our products, advertise our products, & even helps us with the tax & administrative side of things. The cost of doing business on their platform is definitely high & often painstaking, but it really enables us to do a lot & has taught us a lot about running an online business.
