Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Courtney Hill. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Courtney, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
If I could go back in time, I would definitely say that I wish I would have started my creative journey sooner. I started the Defining Chic blog in 2013 however at the time it was more so a hobby and a creative outlet that I did in my spare time. During this period, I was living in Philadelphia and I was working in the public health sector as a medical case manager. Most of my days were spent out in the field and my evenings were dedicated to being a parent and trying to unwind and process the day’s matters. The weekends were my chance to attend events, shop at my favorite stores and recap all the happenings on my blog. While I did have a personal social media account during that time, I did not start the seperate Defining Chic instagram until 2018 and I started my youtube channel in 2021.
Looking back, I certainly wish that I had been more intentional and committed to my creative endeavors. I believe that I could have been alot further along in my journey however I also believe that is it never too late to start making changes and pursing things that really bring you joy. I have always loved fashion and beauty. I come from a family of fashion forward women so this has always been apart of my life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
So a little bit about myself, as I mentioned earlier, I am originally from Philadelphia, PA. I lived there my entire life and I have worked in the human services industry for close to two decades. I moved to South Florida mid-pandemic during the Summer of 2020. I was looking for a fresh start and I wanted to expand my network and step out of my comfort zone. I left behind everything that was familair to embark on a new journey in unknown territory. I will admit that it was somewhat scary however I am very proud of myself for my resiliency and I hope that my story inspires others to take that leap and face their fears. Since I have been in South Florida, so many opportunities have come about and many doors have been opened. I have met so many incredible people in the blogging and influencer industry. This experience has been nothing short of amazing.
My mission is to encourage women to Define their Chic and live a life that is authetic and satisfying. I believe that you can look and feel good no matter what your budget may be. I use my plaforms to showcase affordable fashion and beauty items as well as free and low cost events throughout South Florida.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think that some may not realize the amount of time and effort that goes into creating content and telling a story through photos etc. It is so much more than just taking pictures and uploading to social media platforms. There is alot that goes on behind the scenes as well as a great amount of trial and error. Also social media has drastically changed over the past few years and trying to figure out the algorithm and build a solid community requires dedication. I am a small creator and I will admit that it can be somewhat disheartening at times when you feel that you have worked really hard and put so much energy into a post or video and it does not receive the reception that you had hoped for but I believe that happens in any industry.
We all have certain goals and expectations for ourselves and when they are not met, we can feel a little disappointed. I do believe that no matter how big or small of a creator you may be, you will attract the right audience and you will build your tribe. I truly love doing what I do and I am excited for all that is to come in the future.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is meeting so many unique people from literally all over the world and being about share stories and insights. I find it very fascinating to hear their journeys and I also use those conversations to learn more about the industry and I have also learned a great deal about myself. I have been given some really great feedback and resources from fellow creatives during events as well as online. I have encountered some of the most talented people and they all have been so encouraging, open and helpful.
