We were lucky to catch up with Courtney Hicks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name Naturally Hicks came naturally, no pun intended. My goal has been to embrace a more natural lifestyle. Through my platforms, my goal is to share and educate others about how I live with the intention of living a more organic way of life through homesteading, gardening, essential oils and so forth. I feel the name aligns perfectly with my intentions.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was climbing that corporate ladder in the fashion industry, living in fast pace and like so many of us, I burned out. I needed a change. When Covid changed all of our lives I realized really quickly how important our health is. I’ve used essential oils for as long as I can remember for natural remedies but covid really amplified my interest. I went down a complete rabbit hole and once you start seeing and understanding the impacts of toxic “stuff” in your home, you can’t unsee it. I started making my own cleaning products and it became an obsession of what can I make next. I started posting on Pinterest and really enjoyed teaching others how to use essential oils. From there it snowballed. Our next course of action was food and my husband and I dove head first into learning how we could have a small homestead that included laying chickens, meat chickens, a garden and an orchard. Looking back it’s funny to think I wanted nothing to do with gardening part. Jokes on me! My garden has become a place where I find myself when I need to lose myself. I want to be able to inspire and teach others so they too can have a place to find themselves.
My goal for doing this business is to show even just one person that its do able, that they can learn from experiences and turn around and be successful themselves. I feel like many of us overcomplicate things and it doesn’t have to be complicated, if I can do it with a screaming baby on my hip so can you. I dream of working with clients strategizing, planning and building their own gardens. It’s something I think about daily. I am currently working on building that dream of mine and the goal is to offer services in Spring of 2025. Ranging from consulting on the “how do I do x” to planning out spring/summer/fall crops.
There are so many amazing gardeners that I take inspiration from. What sets me apart from other gardeners is the other aspects of my business. I want to show my followers a lifestyle. Starting out I was told to find a niche and stick to it. But that’s not my life, I have many obsessions *chuckling. If essential oils is not your thing that’s okay here is another avenue to explore because living naturally doesn’t have to be straight lined. You can grow food in your backyard, use natural remedies for sickness and still enjoy a blizzard from DQ.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is such a vital piece in business these days. It doesn’t happen over night, at least for the majority of us. Building an audience on social media has many challenges and takes time. Trust the process, it will happen. My TikTok and Pinterest platforms have many followers whereas my Instagram is a very small amount. Every platform is unique, that’s the amazing part about social media. My best piece of advice is to figure out what your audience is on each platform. My Pinterest audience is much different than my TikTok audience. It can be discouraging but consistency is key. Show up, even when you don’t want to or have no idea what to post.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
After I left my corporate job I decided I wanted to go into real-estate. I really enjoyed all the aspects of that industry and felt it was a great opportunity to use my set of skills. However that journey was put on pause when covid hit. I really struggled going from working non stop to staying home with my kids and homeschooling. I was so grateful that I was able to stay home but felt I was missing something. I’m such a busy mind and thankfully I turned all that extra time into learning a new set of skills that I now get to share with all my followers.
