We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney Gray a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I love this question, because it applies to every area of our lives. The greatest skill a person can learn to get what they want in life is to be able to feel and process negative emotion. If you are going to grow in any way, you will have to be willing to do something new, and probably fail in your attempting to do this new thing. When we fail, we open ourselves up to feeling negative emotions. Insecurity, doubt, fear, it is all part of the process of growth. And attempting to not feel any of these emotions is what keep people stuck living the same life over and over.
In my own life, I built a multiple 6 figure business that I loved. I created fused glass jewerly from my home studio while raising my 3 boys. What I created was amazing, and it took a lot of allowing of the negative emotions to keep going, growing, and building.
A few years ago I started another business as a Body and Life Coach. It is my 2nd chapter, and as I have built this business I have gradually let the jewelry business go. This has been the hardest transition I have ever done. I have not waited till I felt aligned, or 100% sure, I have done it feeling doubt and fear.
So often people are waiting to feel good about something before they move forward. They want to feel motivated to go to the gym, they want to feel sure before they ask for a raise.
My coaching is this: Don’t wait. Decide what your reason is for wanting to do something, and do you like this reason? Then do it scared. Do it even though you have doubt. Even thought you might fail, and keep going.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I help women lose weight permanently by learning the mindset to eat better forever. I help them do this without dieting, as dieting is only a temporary fix for weight loss and health. The women I work with are tired of restriction, thinking about food and their bodies so often, and tired of the drama.
I became a Body & Life Coach because I struggled with 12 pounds. I would start most days promising to eat perfectly and do pretty well until right around 4pm and I would completely change my mind. I would decide that my weight didn’t matter, chips and salsa weren’t that bad, and life was too short to deprive myself. Then I would once again go to bed frustrated with myself, and make yet another promise to do better tomorrow.
In order to lose weight permanently I learned WHY I was eating in the first place. I understood my brain, my habits, and my emotions and how they all played a role into my eating.
So many women go through a similar over eating cycle and I help them get out of it by learning the mindset necessary for losing weight permanently.
My program is different than so many other weight loss programs because it solves the problem of eating more than your body needs, instead of just changing up your food for a month and then slowly gaining the weight back.
My program changes YOU instead of changing your diet for a few weeks and hoping not to go back to how you used to eat.
I am most proud of all the women who have not only lost weight in my program, but who say this work has changed every area of their life.
Many of my clients are midlife and beyond and they are feeling in control of their eating for the first time ever. It is never to late to make powerful permanent changes!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for my business AND the best resource I have used to build my brand is my podcast. My podcast is called Modern Body Modern Life and I create a new one every single Tuesday. Rain or shine, my followers know they will have one to listen to every Tuesday. I am honest, authentic, and raw on my podcast and I believe listeners are either all in or all out when they listen. This is a good thing, you want to call in a person who resonates with you and your message so being authentic is important.
I also decided to do a teaching podcast, I know there are many podcasts where the host will interview people, but I wanted to provide an experience where listeners can learn from me every week.
When people come to work with me, often they are an avid listener of the podcast so are already “bought in” to my processes and ideas.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have built solid social media presences on facebook and Instagram for my jewelry business and have focused on Instagram for my Body & Life Coaching Business. My advice is consistency and video. Be willing to show your face and speak to your audience and solve their problems.
When I am creating content to post I always think “what is my ideal client struggling with right now” and I speak to their problem.
I also advise to go all in for a year to develop an audience on social media and don’t get too caught up in the false metrics of likes and comments.
Lastly, people will judge you but you can handle it, you’ve got this!
