We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Courtney Dorsey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Courtney below.
Courtney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
What my parents did right was have me! I’m joking. I believe what my parents did right was raise my siblings and me to put God first in our lives. Having that foundation has been pivotal in my life’s ups and down. It’s reminded me what to put my hope and faith in. It’s grounded me when I became too prideful or egotiscal. It’s strengthened me when I’ve been in dark places. Without that foundation, I feel that I would never have found my way through this complex life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was to stop thinking so small. Being that I was from a small town and hadn’t seen very much of the world outside of my four corners, I had to unlearn thinking within my own bubble, expand my thought process, and become a more critical AND creative thinker. The only professions that I really knew about were doctor, teacher, lawyer, nurse, etc., and I would be able to provide a reputable life for myself and family with those wonderful career choices. As my creative side started to develop more, I realized those weren’t necessarily the only options I wish I had. Then I was exposed to the wonderful world of college, reading, people, and traveling, and learned more from others and experiences that helped me understand that I didn’t have to be one or the other, I didn’t have to have a traditional life to be successful. Hell, I didn’t even have to have an extraordinary life to be successful. I just have to unlearn thinking small and be strategically ambitious and faithful. Now, I am a teacher and a writer.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is actually being creative. Inventing new things, experiencing new ways of life, opening oneself to more possibilities without feeling far away from God is a wonderful feeling. God is The Creator, He’s a creative. If I’m made in His likeness and image, than I should bask in the creative realm of my mind and heart through meditation, reading the Word, connecting with The Source, and operating in that calling/purpose. I’ve tried to this without God and it really sucks, I’ve tried to be one way and my creative side felt starved (The Holy Spirit). The most rewarding aspect is the flexibility and fluidity of creativity; it keeps flowing when used.
