We were lucky to catch up with Courtney Broughton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The year was 2016. My best friend’s birthday was approaching. We’d gifted each other wonderful things throughout the year but I wanted this particular gift to show just how well I knew her.
At the time, my creative juices were running wild when making charm bracelets. I headed to the nearest arts and crafts store in search of the perfect charms. Mentally, I took a deep dive into our friendship. Almost 4 hours later, I left the store with a bangle and charms that intricately matched her goals, hobbies and other things that brought her joy.
I assembled the bracelet and was quite happy with the outcome. We met up on the weekend of her birthday to celebrate. I remember feeling an array of emotions. I was anxious yet excited. I desperately wanted her to feel the love that I put into the charm bracelet. As she opened the gift box, her tears came rolling. Shortly after, we embraced and shared those tears. She loved the bracelet! The personalization of the bracelet had brought her to happy tears. Her reaction was overwhelming.
I knew then and there that I wanted to empower women in this way, with physical pieces that would make their souls smile. What’s more personal and empowering than a physical reminder of what makes you so amazing? I was immersed in gratitude. Her tears showed that I was appreciated. I was beautifully overwhelmed knowing that I could make someone feel so loved.
I firmly believe that people will always remember how you have made them feel, good or otherwise. It has always been my intention to radiate feelings that uplift others. Carrie Love charm bracelets are much more than beautiful pieces. It will be the reminder of the way you have made someone feel. Loved, with the ability to carry love.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Carrie Love is a brand that roots for the empowered woman. Being female is powerful. Womanhood is beautiful and at times layered with complexity. I have always viewed the woman as art. Her ability to grow anything that is given to her is nothing short of a phenom. Whether it’s managing an office, owning the office, bringing life into the world or balancing a household, women are nothing short of resilient.
It brings me joy to see women clap for themselves. A confident woman deserves to be boastful of her success. I take great pride in knowing that I am an owner that actually stands by this philosophy. My passion derives from seeing women own their power.
I have travelled to 12 countries solo and will continue to do so when I desire to. I envision goals and carry them out. Most importantly with great intention, I uplift other women through verbal delivery. When I see an empowered woman sit in her glory, it lights my soul on fire in the most beautiful way.
Carrie Love sells charm bracelets that has concepts that every woman can relate to, whether she’s is a mother, a dog mom, a wine drinker or a free spirit like myself. Carrie Love is here to say, ” Celebrate what makes you happy! It’s okay!” Our company slogan is “Live Unapologetically” and we mean just that!
Have you ever had to pivot?
Carrie Love recently underwent a rebrand. We originally began in August 2021. With no education of brand identity, business, marketing or otherwise, I ran around to variety of different popular festivals assuming that customers would see the product, fall in love and momentum for the brand would set ablaze. That did not happen.
I spent lots of money with little profit or brand recognition in return. I was essentially chasing my tail. Ideally it would have been great not to lose that money. In hindsight, it was good for me. It forced me to get a business mentor that taught me about building a business from every aspect. It allowed me to rebrand with precise focus. It allowed me to give customers the premium quality that they deserve from all angles.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
While working for the last 3 years, I knew that I wanted to start a business. It was simply a matter of what the business would be. I tucked money away in a business account throughout those 3 years in preparation. Saving can be tough but anything that is worthwhile, is worth being disciplined enough to achieve.
