We recently connected with Courtney Arte and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
A project that I worked on that was particularly meaningful was a mural project in Uvalde, Texas. This project was to honor the 21 innocent victims of the mass shooting that occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde Texas. My previous mural that I did for Dia de Los Muertos was to honor victims of COVID. Through doing these murals I realized the impact of how art and public art can help heal us artists as well as helping the communities. The Uvalde mural project was powerful emotional and taught me what a beautiful thing it was that all of us as artists were able to come together with the families and create a space to honor these children and teachers and a space to help the community heal.

Courtney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My main focus over the years was in visual arts, mostly painting, but I recently started doing some interior & exterior design work as well as furniture design. My paintings and designs are heavily influenced by my Mexican and Cuban heritage but have their own unique style which is something that I am most proud of. With my art & designs I love to be a visual storyteller combining human emotion, nature, music, vivid colors and patterns.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to touch peoples emotions and bring people together through art. With my interior, exterior and furniture designs my goal is to do something similar by creating spaces that provoke emotion and are unique and take people out of the norm to something different. Through the arts we have the ability to create a universal language for people to connect. Which is why I believe sometimes communicating through a visual image or performance can be more powerful than words.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The first step I think society can take to try to support the arts is to look at it from a different perspective and understand that the arts are a necessity. We need exercise for our bodies physical health as we need the arts for our mental health. By spending money in the arts by purchasing from or sponsoring artists of all types and investing a little bit of time into attending events as well as supporting artists on social media is a great start to help create a thriving creative ecosystem. We all benefit from helping our communities mental health.
