We were lucky to catch up with Courtney and Stephen Stahl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney and Stephen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Courtney: As soon as I entered college, I fell in love with songwriting. It was then I knew I wanted to pursue music full-time. Stephen: When I started playing guitar at age 9.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We met in 2010 making music together. We had chemistry in and out of the studio and the rest is history. We’ve written hundreds (possibly thousands) of songs together over the years but only the ones that mean the most to us have been released. Our name is an homage to the Vancouver airport code and the city in which we became engaged. Our music career began with songwriting/producing for other bands/groups including EXO, Red Velvet, Girls Generation
and many others—with over 5 million records sold and a combined 10 number one singles (including two that have reached #1 on the Billboard World Album Charts)
A couple years after writing for others, we decided to write our own music. We put out two EP’S (“Night Days” and “How Have You Been?”) which garnered critical acclaim from American Songwriter, HollywoodLife, Earmilk, and other leading music media outlets. We went on our first tour with SoFar Sounds in early 2020 and have had our songs “What If” and “Bad at Goodbyes” featured on multiple radio stations across the US including iHeart Radio’s LA station, Alt 98.7.
We are currently working on our debut album.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to create something out of nothing is a very rewarding feeling. Writing a new song you love provides such a natural high. Then sharing that art with the outside world is incredibly liberating.
