Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Courtney Alabi-Isama. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Courtney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I truly started my business to show single mothers that anything can be done with a little hard work an effort. I started my small business 8 years ago an originally didn’t have a lot of confidence nor resources. One day I just woke up an said enough was enough, I got up an started pushing towards providing the best party and decor experience I could.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a single mom of 1 and I’ve always been creative in every aspect of the word. I’ve always wanted to change the world by creating something amazing that someone could look at an smile. So I begin my start into owning my own small business which honestly at first was a big struggle with trying to work a full time job, being a single mom and trying to start up a business. I decided to create Grand Creations by CoCo to give people an affordable one stop shop for all home decor and party needs. I originally started small with 8″ & 16″ papermache letters that I would decorate for events an parties to now having small contracts with venues and event spaces. I’m definitely most proud of being able to put a smile on my clients and customers faces is priceless. I now provide all party decor and take special requests orders for someone that might want something customized. I also create logos for chip bags, Capri Suns and more. I pray that my brand, story and love for creating can inspire the world.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that, in order for your business to thrive you have to have the support of your family an friends. I had to learn the hard way that no matter how hard you work or try you absolutely cannot make anyone support you. Genuine support will come for every which way an in my case most of my support comes from my Amazing clients an customers that refer me to others an constantly give me orders of encouragement.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
I definitely had a near death moment of my business during the pandemic. I live in Houston, TX an when everything was shut down for so long I almost loss everything. I literally had to do whatever I could to maintain an come out on the other side.
